EVOLVE 136

September 21, 2019 – Queens, New York

Arturo Ruas def. Anthony Gutierrez
These guys got involved before and after each other’s matches on recent shows to set this up. This was fun in an MMA-style exhibition kind of way. The crowd started chanting Bloodsport just in time for Gutierrez to start hitting high spots, and I like to think he did it to spite them. I appreciate that they did something different. Ruas rolled Gutierrez up by surprise at 4:56 for the win. Cute stuff all around, and I’d accept a rematch on my television. ***

WALTER def. Kassius Ohno
Ohno took the Pete Dunne route here, going after WALTER’s hand and fingers, even hitting a senton to his elbow at 90 degrees. Pretty neat. This had some weird pacing issues, and a screwdriver spot on the outside seemed really out of place. Wasn’t Ohno playing babyface in EVOLVE? What was that all about? Like in his match the night before, WALTER eventually just decided at one point that the match was over and he stopped selling the hand and hit a back superplex for the win at 12:47. Really mixed bag here. ***

Austin Theory def. Josh Briggs {EVOLVE Championship Match}
They did the epic video package before this match, but then Briggs was coming into this having lost to Ohno, so I suppose it was a toss up. Theory was very much transitioning into the NXT style, and they had to the best of their abilities a Takeover style finisher-spamming main event. It kind of ran in third gear the whole time, which was fun but didn’t make for any peaks or valleys. The crowd also got heavily invested in it, which makes for a more engaging watch even without the drama of Driggs ever being in danger before the finish. The referee got knocked out and Ohno ran in to attack Driggs (why? He’d already beaten him twice) and that was enough to give Theory the win with Ataxia at 12:03. ***¼
