EVOLVE 131

July 13, 2019 – Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

Arturo Ruas def. Anthony Henry
Henry’s nose got broken at the very beginning of the match, and while he mostly stayed composed it definitely affected his performance here. It’s a shame, as this was the EVOLVE match I was most excited for, but it couldn’t live up to their first match given Henry’s issues with spacial relativity. It wasn’t bad, it just didn’t click like their first match did. Frankly I’m surprised Ruas won here, as this felt like the place where Henry should finally get revenge on Ruas after all the crap the Brazilian pulled, but Ruas won with a roundhouse kick out of nowhere. ***

Babatunde def. Colby Corino
Corino (and Sean Maluta in his corner) got in a few fun shots here, but it was more or less a dominant squash for Babatunde. After the match the Unwanted come out to confront Babatunde, but the Skulk make the save and the tag title match begins. No NXT presence means none of that for me, thanks. **

Matt Riddle def. Drew Gulak
Riddle has Curt Stallion in his corner, which I guess lets us know that the main event between them tomorrow night is a student vs. teacher match. This took its time building into something suitably intense, to the point that by the end I was buying every near-fall. Sometimes I enjoy a match that forces me to be patient and doesn’t give me all the goodies right out of the gate, and this was one of those times. This had pretty much the exact same finish as Riddle’s match against Roderick Strong from Takeover, but damn I was sure Gulak was going to take him down with the GuLock right before the reversal. Also, they’re protecting the hell out of Riddle, putting him over a guy who has a title match on PPV tomorrow night while Riddle might not even be on the next Takeover special. ***¾

Adam Cole def. Akira Tozawa {NXT Championship Match}
There were more than one moment in this match when I thought Tozawa was legitimately hurt, and I did not like them. That and a few pacing issues aside, this was a good time at the matches. I was very surprised when Johnny Gargano made an appearance (because he hasn’t appeared on NXT TV since Cole won the title), distracting Cole long enough to help Tozawa stop him from using the title belt to end the match cheaply. Cole won moments later by blocking a diving senton and hitting the Panama City Sunrise and the Last Shot. I’ll be very curious to see if they acknowledge this interaction on NXT this Wednesday. ***½

Johnny Gargano cuts a  babyface promo to close out the show, since Tozawa wasn’t really an EVOLVE wrestler. That said, Tozawa does get to ask the crowd if they enjoyed the show, and that just gives me the warm and fuzzies (and also kind of blows my mind because CIMA is wrestling on a competing show on this very night).
