Babatunde def. Harlem Bravado
It didn’t take very long for Babatunde to get over; the crowd loves him now. This match was pretty well-structured, if somewhat blatantly choreographed. They kept it short, made Babatunde look strong, but also kept Bravado looking like a clever guy who could stay alive for a while. After the match, JD Drake comes out and has a stare-down with the big man, as they’ll fight for Drake’s title tomorrow night. Babatunde gets a little aggressive with him before leaving. **
Arturo Ruas def. Josh Briggs
Briggs looks like if Baron Corbin had the face of Jim Henson and never lost his hair. He’s also way less insufferable than Corbin. Ruas was on his game here, bringing interesting and unorthodox offense while also bouncing around like a pinball for the much larger Briggs. The finish was a little hinky, as a blocked super chokeslam didn’t look that convincing, and was then followed by a Ruas heel hook that got him the win despite Briggs never tapping out or quitting. The commentators cut the ref a lot of slack, saying the safety of the athletes is the most important thing. Pretty inconsistent, that. **¾
Tyler Breeze def. AR Fox
The Skulk’s awe-filled reaction to Breeze is pretty great. They went an interesting route here, as Breeze was having trouble with Fox early on, having to go back to a back heel kick multiple times when he couldn’t get momentum going, only to surprise Fox by countering all of his signature offense and defense as if he’d studied the guy heavily and winning the match that way. That hustle was fun to see, and the match was a solid back-and-forth ride to get us there. ***½
Roderick Strong def. Anthony Henry
Lenny Leonard did a solid job guiding the story of the match on commentary, noting that both guys had really bad tempers, which informed most of the proceedings. Strong had the advantage for a lot of the match after he lost his shit and hammered Henry all over ringside. For his part, Henry was able to get quite close to winning by focusing, staying calm, and letting Strong’s momentum run out of control. I could have done with a slightly more interesting finish, as what we got here was Strong just losing it again and kicking Henry in the face until he was prone for the Stronghold. It was convincing, but it wasn’t as engaging as the rest of the bonkers match. For my money, Henry is the most talented unsigned guy on the EVOLVE roster. ****
