May 29, 2019 – Glasgow, Scotland
The show starts with a great video package summing up last week’s title match and the new heel stable that seems to be in control. Speaking of which, WALTER comes out with his European allies Fabian Aichner & Marcel Barthel. The three of them standing together in front of the white screen in the otherwise dark arena looks just fantastic. The way they balance the subtle fascist imagery without actually calling attention to it is really nice. They also actually get the crowd to boo WALTER and demand Pete Dunne. The Europeans are calling themselves Imperium, and they want to lead NXT UK in a more sacred and professional direction. Dunne comes out, flanked by Mustache Mountain, and everybody brawls. One of the cameramen gets taken out as referees come to break up the fight, and the technical issues cut the show to black. I really liked that as a way to transition out of the segment.
Backstage, Sid Scala books Imperium vs. British Strong Style in a six-man tag match in two weeks.
Mark Coffey & Wolfgang def. A-Kid & Carlos Romo
I like that there’s a rather distinct difference between the hooliganish Gallus and the more refined Imperium. Romo & A-Kid are Spanish. Considering them, Ilja Dragunov, and Imperium, it feels like all the European talent will be integrated into this brand rather than starting the rumored NXT Europe. That said, it seems like the Spaniards were just here for a cup of coffee as they got super squashed in front of a receptive crowd. N/A
Xia Brookside says that Jinny took a page out of Rhea Ripley’s book by being a big bully against smaller girls, only she doesn’t think Jinny has the guts of Ripley since she had to recruit Jazzy Gabert to fight for her. Isla Dawn comes up and reminds Brookside about the surprisingly quite good match the two of them had against each other a while back. She wants to team up against Jinny & Gabert. Meanwhile, Joseph Conners wants to fight Dragunov. Then they show a big hype video for next week’s contender match.
Kassius Ohno def. Jack Gallagher
Speaking of Dawn and Brookside’s match, these two worked a match in a similar style that was able to be supremely engaging while being relatively low-impact. Ohno took every shortcut he could, which was fantastic as he got the crowd booing simple things like kicks that he shot unprovoked. He even won when Gallagher’s foot was under the ropes. I really enjoyed this, and I’m not mad that they’re almost definitely going to have a rematch. ***¼
Piper Niven is ready to fight Rhea Ripley. Maybe they’ll pull the trigger on this thing finally?
Toni Storm def. Nina Samuels {NXT UK Women’s Championship Match}
Samuels is just as average as can be, and nobody bought her winning this thing for a second so there was no drama. I’d love to know if there’s a reason that both women’s feuds (Niven vs. Ripley and Storm vs. Kay Lee Ray) are being dragged out for so long, because stopgaps like this one aren’t doing the trick. If there’s a huge show coming up and that’s why they’re saving these matches (and possibly next week’s winner vs. WALTER) then okay, it’ll have been worth it. But there’s no indication that that’s the case so for now we’re stuck with solid but forgettable placeholder matches like this one. At least they didn’t make it appear that Storm had too much trouble with Samuels here. **¾
