EVOLVE 127

May 10, 2019 – Livonia, Michigan

Adrian Jaoude def. Josh Briggs
Briggs was coming off an injury sustained in a match against AR Fox. This was going along just fine until Austin Theory came out and attacked Briggs (leading to Jaoude getting the win), showing that this match was just an excuse to enhance the Briggs/Theory issue. After the match Jaoude turns heel by proxy by nodding in approval of Theory’s interference. **½

Babatunde def. Adrian Alanis
AR Fox set up this match for his stablemate as a way to motivate him and the rest of the Skulk. This was just a squash, and nor a particularly exciting one, but on the bright side Babatunde moves around the ring more quickly than Dan Matha does. Later in the evening, Babatunde saved JD Drake from an Unwanted attack after Drake had defeated Joe Gacy in a WWN title defense. N/A

AR Fox & Leon Ruff def. Harlem Bravado & Kassius Ohno
Lenny Leonard said the quiet part out loud near the end of the match when he suggested that the referee just stop the thing. It just went on and on forever. There were brief bursts of interesting action, mostly thanks to Fox, but for the most this was one-speed. There was no reason for this match to go THIRTY minutes; they just didn’t have the goods to fill the time. It was an example of a match that after a point made me angrier and angrier with every kick out. I didn’t buy any of this, and when it was over it felt like it just existed to let Ruff kick out of a million finishers and get the win in front of his hometown crowd. Garbage. *

Adam Cole def. Austin Theory
Theory’s title wasn’t on the line here. Like Cole’s match against Darby Allin, this was another shorty. Though after the tag match earlier in the night I’m not so mad to watch something brief. That said, I’m not sure what the benefit is of having Cole come to EVOLVE, as he’s having middling matches (by his standards) by design and isn’t putting anyone over. I guess they’re just banking on his name being a draw, but that doesn’t make for an interesting watch. That said, they jammed a lot of interesting stuff into this match that entertained while letting us know that Theory can hang, even though Cole was a class above him. Cole even let Theory kick out of the Panama Sunrise, which is a nice gift to a champion doing a job. In the end, a Nate Webb distraction helped Cole get the win, setting up a title match the next night for Webb. ***½
