NXT 505

May 8, 2019 – Winter Park, Florida

Bianca Belair def. Mia Yim
This was decent enough, though it never got out of first gear. The finish, which saw Belair wrap her hair around the ropes to get leverage on the pin (I guess, not sure how that actually works) was creative if you can suspend disbelief for it. **

The Forgotten Sons attacked the Viking Raiders thirty minutes before the show started. We’ll hear from the Raiders next week. Earlier in the day, Shayna Baszler and her friends were sparring when Baszler was attacked by Io Shirai… I think, it was actually hard to tell for a while because of the weird filter over the footage.

Raul Mendoza def. Riddick Moss
This was Moss’s first match in over a year on TV. Mendoza hasn’t been on this show since December, so he’s an odd person to have Moss return against. Moss’s new gimmick is that he uses wellness activities during the match, like meditation and an electric massager. Given that he lost, it seems he’ll be a comedy wrestler going forward. Both guys actually looked pretty good here; Moss is a lot more tolerable without Tino Sabbatelli. This was actually Mendoza’s first ever win on this show. **¾

Kushida will be back next week.

Matt Riddle def. Adam Cole
This would have been absolutely acceptable as a Takeover match. It was exceptional, the best match on the weekly TV show since Velveteen Dream won the North American title at least, and probably the best since Ricochet vs. Pete Dunne. On the surface, you had a fantastic, hard-hitting match in the same genre (for the lack of a better word in my excited state) as Cole’s match against Gargano in Brooklyn. Riddle even exploited Cole’s preparation for the Last Shot in a similar way to how Gargano did it to win the first fall in that Takeover match. Roderick Strong tried to patch things up with Cole by distracting Riddle after Cole was knocked silly, but Riddle is such a crazy beast (he even blocked Cole’s god-killer move, the Panama Sunrise) that it didn’t make a difference. Cole is on fire right now, and Riddle can do absolutely no wrong. After the match, Strong and Cole get into it again, arguing whether or not Strong’s interference was helpful (it wasn’t). The crowd goes back and forth between wanting to see them hug and fight as the show comes to a close. ****¼
