March 20, 2019 – Coventry, West Midlands
Johnny Saint and Sid Scala are in the ring to start the show. They announce that Pete Dunne will be defending the WWE UK Championship at NXT Takeover New York. The crowd is surprisingly jazzed for the announcement given the fact that they won’t be seeing the match live. Dunne comes out and names WALTER his challenger. And that’s it, short and sweet.
Backstage, Toni Storm says she finds Jinny’s trash talk funny. She calls Jinny a spoiled kid who doesn’t know how to be a champion. Storm starts to walk away and has a stare-down with Rhea Ripley. Ripley isn’t concerned with Storm right now, she’s more interested in beating up Xia Brookside again.
Eddie Dennis def. Ligero
Ligero is stuck in a loop. All his programs are just other guys saying they don’t like him for one reason or another and coming after him, then moving on. There’s nothing separating Dennis’ distaste for Ligero from Jordan Devlin’s and Joseph Conners’. It’s all boring, and worse it doesn’t make sense; why do any of these heels care about Ligero, who isn’t particularly over or fun to watch. I guess he has a solid win/loss record. This little bout was actually pretty damn good, which is surprising because it was controlled almost entirely by Dennis. ***
Next up they show a cute little video from the UK Performance Center in which Amir Jordan (who should just give up and shave his head) tries to get Kenny Williams to petition the GM for a tag title shot. Williams is kind of tired of Jordan asking him to do things (this, dance to the ring), so he says if Jordan can train hard enough to do a push up on the chin up bar (I’m not into fitness, I don’t know if this motion has a name but neither does Nigel McGuinness so I feel better) then he’ll talk to Saint. After some hard work and a few hijinks, Jordan manages to pull it off. Williams is excited until Jordan asks him to dance again.
Wild Boar & Primate def. Sam Stoker & Lewis Howley
So Hitchman & Melrose have lost their given names, and it’s just as well because I dig them as just a couple of animals making up The Hunt. This was a total squash and I don’t review squashes but I have to say I like this team and I liked the fun little beating they put on the pretty boys and I like that there’s another real tag team on the roster. Kassius Ohno def. Ashton Smith
Ohno started the match as a babyface, which was interesting given his very good heel shtick going into the match. Most of the match saw Ohno being very aggressive and dominant, but not particularly heelish. Smith showed good fire too. Then, just as I’m thinking that Ohno’s thing in NXT UK is going to be arrogance instead of deviance, Ohno blasts Smith with a roaring elbow after the match. Travis Banks comes out to help Smith and stares down Ohno. Ohno tries to sneak up on Banks but the Kiwi Buzzsaw is ready for him. **¾
Gallus is in a pub, furious that their record is inconsistent right now. They need to establish dominance. Do it then, you butts.
Tyler Bate def. James Drake
As much as any time since Takeover in Blackpool, Drake really delivered here. To no one’s surprise, Bate was stellar here too. I was pretty sure this was a main event of circumstance, but it turned out that these two put together a ripper of a hard-fought match that had the added benefit of introducing the world to a bunch of chants about Drake having his own face on his ass. ***½
WALTER is seen walking away from the GM’s office. Scala makes the title match at Takeover official.
