Ricochet, Amsterdam Black, Johnny Gargano, and Tommaso Ciampa all got sudden pseudo call-ups to the main roster the week after Valentine’s Day. They were all heavily referred to as NXT competitors and had NXT entrance graphics, so I’m reviewing their matches until their statuses officially change. Let’s start with Raw.
February 18, 2019 – Lafayette, Louisiana
Ricochet & Finn Balor def. Bobby Lashley & Lio Rush
Ricochet pinned Rush in 18:03 with the 630 senton. This was cool in that Ricochet got to do his thing and show off his stuff against both a bigger guy and a smaller guy. The match was long however, and featured a lot of Balor getting dominated by Lashley. That’s not so much my thing. I know this is well-traveled ground, but Raw has too much time to fill. **½
Johnny Gargano & Tommaso Ciampa def. Dash Wilder & Scott Dawson
Gargano & Ciampa won after hitting their double strike finisher in 11:25. This was a reader’s digest version of their unbelievable matches in NXT, and it went quite well for the debuting team. There were a couple of moments where it looked like their nerves were getting the best of them, but for the most part it went off quite nicely. I especially appreciate the commentators doing a good job of explaining the current NXT storylines as well as a reasonably dumbed down version of the relationship between Gargano & Ciampa. ***¼
Amsterdam Black def. Elias
Black won with the Black Mass in 8:02. Almost all of this match happened during the commercial, though what we saw on screen was solid. Elias hit a high knee when Black was coming off of the turnbuckle, which was more exciting than anything I ever saw him do in NXT. *¾
And now on to Smackdown Live.
February 19, 2019 – New Orleans, Louisiana
Amsterdam Black def. Andrade
Black won in 8:40 with the Black Mass. This match is taking place almost a year after their title match at Takeover in the same building. Things that are different now: Black and Zelina Vega are married in real life, and Andrade has lost his last name. Also this match got less than half the time their previous match did, and while technically solid, it didn’t blow my pants off like their Takeover match did. More pants being blown off and less NXT stars on Raw and Smackdown Live for seemingly no reason, please. **¾
Johnny Gargano & Tommaso Ciampa def. Cesaro & Sheamus
Gargano & Ciampa won when Ciampa caught Cesaro with a surprise roll up at 16:55. I spent most of this match worrying that Ciampa had been legit injured after Sheamus fell on his knee during a spot off the turnbuckle. The rest of the match was solid, but a good chunk of it happened during the commercial break. They’ve probably got a banger in them, but this wasn’t it, though I’m thankful for the few miscommunication spots between Gargano & Ciampa because it conflicts less with their NXT angle. **¾
Ricochet def. Eric Young
Ricochet won in 6:20. Ricochet is bad match-proof, and Young is a fun bump machine, so this was a good time at the matches. It was short and inconsequential, but I wouldn’t ask for more from them in this position without any kind of storyline attached. **½
I have to just make note of the New Day backstage promo right after the Ricochet Smackdown match, because holy crap did Big E drop a spicy Jussie Smollett take. Damn, man!
