December 19, 2018 – Plymouth, Devon
Jordan Devlin def. Mike Hitchman
This was a basic match in front of a silent crowd. Devlin didn’t have much trouble here, putting Boar away after a few minutes with his Island’s Call DVD. *¾
Mark Andrews & Flash Morgan Webster are all plucky and babyface-ish in a backstage promo. They say the sky is the limit, but this promo was pretty forgettable.
Fabian Aichner def. Eddie Ryan
Ryan is doing a Tiger Mask meets Beta Ray Bill gimmick. He’s really over for a guy who is getting squashed (a match type that I don’t typically review). I dig Aichner, and they were nice enough to let the hometown Ryan get in a decent amount of offense before putting the foreign guy’s knee-to-head-against-the-stairs bit over. **¼
Travis Banks has a score to settle with Joe Coffey. He’s already taken out Wolfgang, and apparently nobody cares about Mark Coffey, so all that’s left is to get revenge on the leader of Gallus. That match will happen next week.
Trent Seven & Tyler Bate def. Saxon Huxley & Tyson T-Bone
Earlier on, Mustache Mountain cut a promo that made me realize that Michigan has copied a lot of British town names. They also said they’re ready to take on all opponents. Huxley and T-Bone could not look like more of a random pairing. They didn’t do anything particularly interesting here, but they did hold up their end of the match enough for Mustache Mountain to look impressive. **¾
Dave Mastiff is still undefeated, and he wants a shot at Pete Dunne’s title. Eddie Dennis isn’t taking his first loss in NXT UK well, and he attacks Mastiff.
We get a Pete Dunne video package, starting with his title win his title win over Bate in Chicago, and hitting on various defenses throughout his title reign (and his War James match). Nigel McGuinness thinks Joe Coffey is going to be the one to take his title.
Next time on NXT UK: Toni Storm is coming back, the Grizzled Young Veterans are taking on Flash Mandrews, and Banks will get his hands on Joe Coffey.
Rhea Ripley def. Isla Dawn {NXT UK Women’s Championship Match}
Dawn inspires no love from the crowd, and thus her faux strong style maneuvers are unconvincing. This was a very uninspiring first defense for Ripley, who oversold for this nonsense when she should have been much more dominant. Ripley kicked out of Dawn’s finisher, but nobody bought that Dawn could win anyway and even still she only lost because she made a mistake. The women’s title matches have been frustrating so far. **½
