EVOLVE 115

November 9, 2018 – Livonia, Michigan

Livonia is not Detroit, no matter how many times Lenny Leonard says they’re in the D. I didn’t sit through a million local commercials for the Jewelry Factory to NOT know that Livonia is very much its own city. That said, there’s a crowd of more than 50 people here (looks like a few hundred) so that’s a step up from the last show.

Mustafa Ali def. DJZ
Ali only wrestled two matches on NXT, but screw it he’s only on two EVOLVE shows so I might as well knock these out too. DJZ and Ali have really similar entrance gear. This was a solid cruiserweight style match, harkening back to the medium-good Nitro matches that used to happen in that division on a regular basis. They didn’t do much to really draw you in, but they flipped about with a good bit of proficiency and kept things moving at a fun pace. Not my kinda wrestling, but totally fine and the crowd dug it a lot. Leonard shills for Survivor Series on the WWE Network hard after the match, so that partnership is in full force. ***

Angelo Dawkins & Montez Ford def. Anthony Henry & JD Drake {EVOLVE Tag Team Championship Match}
The Workhorsemen are a way better team than Doom Patrol, so this was a lot more watchable than the Street Profits’ title win. They worked the Takeover tag team style here and did it without much difficulty, which lets me know that with some polish the Street Profits can be slotted into a Takeover tag team title match if need be. The finish sort of came out of nowhere, but given that Drake and Henry are both singles champions in the WWN universe it makes sense that the Profits would have to sneak in a victory. ***½

Fabian Aichner def. Kassius Ohno {EVOLVE Championship Match}
Last time around I wondered why they chose to put Aichner over for the title on the last show with no build as a babyface. The crowd apparently feels the same way because he gets booed here. On the other hand, Ohno gets treated like a hero. Ohno tends to work his best matches against guys who work a similar style, and Aichner was game to throw bombs with the Pajama Shirt Kid. They had some trouble with the finish, but the rest of the match was hard hitting fun, even if it dragged some in the middle. Not too surprising since their shorter match on NXT TV a year earlier was a good time. Henry comes out after the match and challenges Aichner for his title. Henry doesn’t like the NXT guys coming in and taking top spots. That bonds Ohno & Aichner, which might have been a bad move on Henry’s part. ***
