Otis Dozovic & Tucker Knight def. Steve Cutler & Wesley Blake
Oh my gaaaaaaaaaaaad I’ve missed Dozer. Cutler bumps for Dozer’s Caterpillar the way Shawn Michaels bumped for Hulk Hogan’s legdrop, so that dude’s alright in my book. Then they went ahead and had a surprisingly dope match! Knight actually got to shine more than Dozer for a change, which is disappointing to me personally but impressive because he made the most of the opportunity. The Forgotten Sons really brought it too. I was caught of guard by this in the best way. ***
Shayna Baszler and her two goons get interviewed backstage. The interviewer wants to know what happens when Kairi Sane invokes her rematch clause? Baszler is more interested in being recognized as the first ever two-time NXT Women’s Champion. William Regal is interested in the Sane question, so he strolls up and tells Baszler that she’ll face Sane at Takeover WarGames in a Two Out of Three Falls match for the title. This is a pretty stellar testament to booking around WWE Network specials that were held at inconvenient times in relation to each other. Color me impressed. Sidenote: Marina Shafir looks weird when NXT makes her wear too much makeup.
Dakota Kai def. Taynara Conti
It was nice of Nigel McGuinness & Vic Joseph to let Kai tag along with them in their teleportation device to get to the NXT show so soon after the NXT UK show they were all on earlier in the day. I find Conti really irritating, which makes it hard for me to say that this was actually a pretty solid showing from both women. Kai looked competent for a change, and Conti heeled it up in way that wasn’t entirely cartoonish. **¼
Mia Yim’s joyful promo over being signed to NXT is interrupted by Bianca Belair. Yim goes from being a Blasian to being a “baddy.” They’ll fight next week. I still want a blow off between Jesus Cross and Belair, but it seems like Cross is moving on to fight Candice LeRae (and then maybe move on to the main roster) while Yim and Belair go at it. That’s pretty annoying, and I really hope Cross’s farewell match will be a decisive one against Belair.
Last week, Keith Lee and Matt Riddle were enjoying being reunited in NXT, but their party was spoiled by a party pooping Kassius Ohno. Lee and Riddle are adorable together.
Johnny Gargano sends in a video to explain why he attacked Amsterdam Black, from the place where he laid out Black. He more or less did it for predictable reasons; he wanted to be the one to beat Tommaso Ciampa for the NXT Championship. Gargano still sees himself as the hero at the end of this story. He did one evil thing, but he’s still the same Johnny Gargano. But he’s realized that sometimes you have to fight a little dirty in NXT.
Lars Sullivan def. Velveteen Dream
Dream’s title shot wasn’t technically on the line here, but I’ll go ahead and say that it was in spirit. Both guys in this match were sporting chest hair, so it was fated to be good. Dream bumped like crazy for Sullivan, and lost after being distracted by Ciampa. I was really digging this. These two guys know exactly what role they’re meant to play in a match, and they play it perfectly no matter the opponent. This was a bit short for a main event, and the finish was cheap, but the title match at Takeover needed more juice than it already had. I wonder if this win will mean anything for Sullivan. After the match, Dream and Ciampa fight in an exchange that sees Dream come out on top. ***
