Toni Storm def. Meiko Satomura {Semifinal Match}
They backed into a great tournament-long story in which Storm has had to fight her way through all the Japanese imports to get to through the tournament (spoiler alert for the next match). She also had to beat Jinny and Mia Yim but those matches don’t fit the narrative. Anyway, the crowd didn’t buy into the really good mat wrestling in the first half of the match. Their loss. But it didn’t stop them from losing their goddamn minds for the insanely hot second half of the match, in which Satomura got caught with a Storm Zero, then lost her cool and went all out with striking offense, only to get caught again with another Storm Zero. I’m so in on Storm right now, and was especially impressed with how she worked this match for the hard camera. Kairi Sane congratulates Storm, and Triple H sends Satomura off with a bow. ****
Io Shirai def. Rhea Ripley {Semifinal Match}
It’s pretty clear that this match wasn’t meant to happen, so I’m hoping Ripley can bring the goods in what was meant to be Tegan Nox’s big match. That said, they did back into Ripley getting an awesome dickhead moment when she blew off Nox after the injury. And it sure felt like this was her at the top of her game, as she hit hard and sold really well at the appropriate time. It was a little less dramatic than the previous match, but it had a lot of fun big woman-little woman spots. Now I’m just crossing my fingers that Ripley’s upcoming matches in NXT UK are at least on this level. Sane and Shirai hug after the match. I can’t wait to see them fight each other in WWE. ***½
Sane, Triple H, Sara Amato, Shirai, and Storm all pose on the ramp, and it becomes clear that Storm and Shirai are buds. I have a good feeling about the finals.
