Adam Cole def. Danny Burch
For as much chemistry as Burch and Oney Lorcan had with the tag champs, Burch and Cole rarely clicked as anything special here. They tried hard, but it seemed like there wasn’t much to mine. **¾
It’s clear that Baszler is going to run through Kairi Sane at Takeover on her way to dropping the title to La Rae. And then Dakota Kai says that she’s Baszler’s arch nemesis before being interrupted by the basically perfect Lacey Evans. The women’s division feels a little unmoored.
Kairi Sane def. Vanessa Borne
I do like how the commentators pay close attention to wins and losses in NXT and run them down for both women before the match. I like that Borne, who is half Samoan, uses some of the Samoan wrestling tropes but doesn’t lean heavily on them. This was good fun. I may have said this before but I desperately want Sane to turn heel, hook up with Tommaso Ciampa, and create the ultimate pirate team. In the meantime, Sane calls out Baszler and asks for a title shot. A four way is booked between her, La Rae, Nikki Cross and Bianca Belair, though an injury to Belair would later take her out of that match. ***
Backstage Johnny Gargano lets Amsterdam Black know that he cannot let Ciampa become champion (which is delivered a lot like how a lot of us felt about Trump becoming president in 2016). Black says he’s got it covered, which pretty much telegraphs that he doesn’t. And then Black walks away and Ciampa sneaks up on him and hits the elevated DDT on Black off of a table.
Roderick Strong & Kyle O’Reilly def. Tyler Bate & Trent Seven {NXT Tag Team Championship Match}
I’m amazed that these teams put on two matches within days of each other (in real life, not in WWE Network kayfabe) and basically only used two spots in both. Otherwise these matches were completely different and told a drastically different but equally compelling story. This one, focused more on Seven being the weak link and Bate trying to cover for him because of fear that his mentor was going to get hurt, was incredible. ****¼
