I watched the Takeover specials before I watched the TV show. So I’m going to add notes to my original reviews now that I have the full context. I’ll put them in red… Oh, this is the last one I’ll be doing this for!
June 16, 2018 – Rosemont, Illinois
Roderick Strong & Kyle O’Reilly def. Oney Lorcan & Danny Burch {NXT Tag Team Championship Match}
The Chicago ROHbots booed the babyface Lorcan & Burch like crazy before the match and were 100% behind the Undisputed Era. Then something crazy happened: Lorcan and Burch won them over by having the nuttiest tag team match I’ve seen maybe since the Smackdown Six era. I’ve never seen either of the bald dudes before and now I’m all in for Lorcan and pretty impressed by Burch as well. I mean, guys, this is the best tag match in years! ***** It’s only a bummer that Pete Dunne had nothing to do on this show.
Ricochet def. Velveteen Dream
This was a really fascinating match. It was structured to have Ricochet pretty much completely outclassed, only able to make comebacks when Dream got cocky and lost his temper. Some of the bumps taken in this match were borderline mad, and I’m not sure how anyone can train for something like this. ****½ Apparently they have a padded ring at the Performance Center for that kind of thing. Also apparently Dream was wearing Ricochet’s Lucha Underground Prince Puma tights. Is there a better wrestling character than Dream? Maybe Lars Sullivan, but it’s really close.
Shayna Baszler def. Nikki Cross {NXT Women’s Championship Match}
Well, that was weird. I loved it, but it was super weird. Cross brought such a fun flavor to the Baszler-beats-everyone-down show with her quirky masochism. Best match I’ve seen out of her yet. ***½ I liked this better than the Last Woman Standing match against Asuka for sure. I’m surprised they haven’t called Cross up to the main roster yet.
Aleister Black def. Lars Sullivan {NXT Championship Match}
Sullivan looks like the villain in a Nick Park movie. I like the simple story going into this of Sullivan having Black’s number because he’s such a brick shithouse that he can catch the Black Mass. And then they just beat the ever loving crap out of each other for a while until Black bloodies Sullivan and puts him down with his third and fourth Black Masses (after the first only got 2 and the second was caught). This show is insane.
Rating: ***¾ This match is an amazing example of how you can get someone over while he’s going under by establishing a real feat for him to accomplish during the match. Sullivan is an awesome big man.
Tommaso Ciampa def. Johnny Gargano {Street Fight}
Ciampa had to wear an eye patch after their last match, and I think he should have continued to wear it to keep the evil pirate thing going. I thought this match for the most part was better than their first, but then the segment leading to the table breaking Air Raid Crash took forever to set up, the stretcher portion following it was pretty slow, and the final stretch leading to the finish was almost fetishistic in its violence. But they also paid homage to the Steve Austin vs. Triple H Three Stages of Hell finish and then the actual finish was heartbreaking and brilliant so I’ll split the difference and say this was as good as the original. This in the top 5 wrestling shows I’ve ever seen. ****½ Now I can see that those slow spots were paying homage to things that happened in the last few weeks leading up to this match. Knowing that doesn’t make the match flow better. Still, for this to be the worst match of the series is pretty insane.
