Akam & Rezar def. Nick Miller & Shane Thorne {Quarterfinal Match}
Smaller tournament this year, with just eight teams instead of 16. Lame. This is the first match in the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic, and it’s pretty cool that the tournament starts with what was the finals of the last Dusty Classic. It’s kind of fucked up that Mauro Ranallo pronounces “tope con hilo” with a Japanese r/l. Dude, you’re a white Canadian, stop. This match didn’t really pick up until near the end, but holy crap did it pick up at the end. Thorne took a powerbomb from inside the ring to the apron. I don’t think I’ve ever seen that before. Just wild pinballing from TM61. ***
Roderick Strong and Pete Dunne end up face to face in the parking garage, talking about potentially having another match. The Undisputed Era approaches and Adam Cole makes a crack about Strong losing all his title matches, to which Dunne replies, “You should talk, you haven’t won anything since you’ve been here,” and I actually laugh out loud. That pretty much never happens when I watch wrestling. Dunne and Bobby Fish wore cool scarves in this segment.
Bianca Belair def. Miss Drew Renee
I don’t review squashes, but Belair needs to either practice the Alley-Oop until she can hit it more smoothly or figure out a different finisher. N/A
Tommaso Ciampa makes his official return to NXT, coming out without any music because that was just perfect. See, Johnny Gargano changed his music to something very stylized when he came back from Ciampa’s betrayal, so this is a wonderful contrast. Also, you really hear the boos this way. Also, Ciampa is jacked. He gets frustrated because the crowd boos louder every time he brings the microphone to his face. Rather than say anything, he grabs a Gargano sign from the crowd, rips it, and beats it with his crutch.
Amsterdam Black def. Killian Dain {Number One Contender Match}
Oh my god they’re even calling Black undefeated? It was one thing to say it about Belair and Asuka; at least they’d never been pinned. It was one thing to say it about Drew McIntyre; at least he’d been undefeated (up until his title loss) since his return to NXT. But Black was pinned in a four way. He wasn’t a loser in a four way where someone else was pinned. These are unforced errors that make the product look and sound crappy. This was significantly less interesting than I thought it’d be. Dain works better either mowing over much smaller guys, preferably in large number, or in fighting from behind, like in his match against McIntyre. **½
