December 6, 2017 – Winter Park, Florida
Andrade Cien Almas and Zelina Vega come to the ring to gloat about Almas’s title win. Almas is really quite bad at English, and should just speak spanish and have Vega translate for him. It’s actually making it harder to connect to him to watch him struggle with english.
Killian Dain def. Trent Seven
This match, tonight’s main event, and two more matches down the road are qualifying matches for a four-way number one contender’s match. I like Dain and Jesus Cross’s singles entrances better than their group entrance. This was too short to be anything. *¾
The Undisputed Era cut their first backstage nWo-inspired promo. Adam Cole is taking on Amsterdam Black next week for a spot in a four-way, and then in two weeks reDRagon are getting a tag title shot.
Sonya Deville def. Ruby Riott {No Holds Barred Match}
I’m guessing what they’re really getting at is that rope breaks don’t work in this match. Whereas this angle is usually used to escalate an angle, this one just makes Deville seem like a loser for not being able to beat Riott in a match with rules. Also, this angle started in a triple threat match, in which a rope break didn’t matter. Oy. The match was alright, but it wasn’t exciting (though it wasn’t outright boring), there weren’t really any creative uses of the stipulation, and the finishing submission happening in the ropes is about the bare minimum they could do to let us know this wasn’t a normal match. **¾
Johnny Gargano def. Kassius Ohno
NXT’s mystery man graphic looks like Sean O’Haire. This was originally going to be Velveteen Dream against Ohno, but Dream is injured. I don’t get why any of these three would get a shot, since they all lost in Houston. The last third of this match was straight fire (do I sound cool?). I loved the bit where Gargano faked a kick to the head, then kicked the leg, then kicked the head. They had the crowd flipping out, cheering on both guys, which is a feat because Ohno isn’t that interesting right now. ***½
