Johnny Gargano def. Tino Sabbatelli
This was pretty weird. Gargano was selling as if this match had started immediately after his match with Riddick Moss last week. That had me thinking he was still doing his in-a-rut thing. But then the finish was very How Johnny Got His Groove Back. Sabbatelli did basically nothing here. *
Roderick Strong feels that he deserves a title shot by virtue of beating Bobby Roode. William Regal agrees, and it will happen in two weeks.
Bianca Belair def. Lacey Evans
They kept this really simple, which was smart so as to not get out of their depth, but this wasn’t good enough to be on TV. *½
Amsterdam Black comes out to cut his first promo since joining the company five months earlier. He talks a bit about his past and his tattoos, but before he can say what he wants to do in NXT, he’s interrupted by Velveteen Dream. He mumbles on about this and that until Black kicks the microphone out of his hand. They have a sitting/kneeling stare-down that gets the girls in the crowd freaking out, and then Dream slithers out of the ring.
Lars Sullivan def. No Way Jose
Basic squishy squashy stuff to get over how scary Sullivan is. I didn’t think we were going to do this with him. *½
Bobby Fish & Kyle O’Reilly def. Trent Seven & Tyler Bate
This was pretty damn insane, escalating as it went on. It got a little sloppy-careless at the end, not in a dangerous way but more in a structural way as Fish was in the ring a lot when he wasn’t legal in full view of the referee. NXT tag matches are usually more strict, but I guess they’re trying to get over the chaotic nature of this group. Mission accomplished. After the match, Drew McIntyre chases Fish, O’Reilly, and Adam Cole from the ring, but SAnitY cuts them off. The whole thing ends pretty badly for the new guys. ***½
A juiced promo and good main event make up for a lot of the less interesting stuff on this week’s episode. But why should we stop there? Here’s a bonus match from two days later at an NXT house show that was featured on the Best of NXT in 2017 Blu-Ray.

Johnny Gargano def. Raul Mendoza
This was almost ten minutes longer than their match from TV back in August, and kept up the same fun energy throughout. Given what I’ve seen of other NXT house show matches, this is at the higher end, quality-wise, and I understand why it would be included in a best-of collection (unlike the Drew McIntyre vs. Adam Cole title match ft. HBK as referee that was full of house show kitsch but wasn’t actually that great). Gargano and Mendoza did a lot of little things here very well, including Gargano physically moving Mendoza into place rather than just relying on Mendoza to get where he needed to be for more intricate spots. If you watched the lauded Rey Mysterio vs. Andrade Almas match from Smackdown in January of 2019, one of the reasons you liked it so much was because they did that a lot in that match. It’s something you don’t often notice, and that’s what makes it so great. You’ll have to decide for yourself if a dope house show match is worth an iTunes rental, but I’m glad I’ve seen this one now. ***½
And here’s another bonus match, because the Cruiserweight Championship is now an NXT title and I’m reviewing every title defense of the WWE/NXT Cruiserweight Championship and post them on the NXT TV reviews that preceded them. Here’s the title defense from No Mercy 2017.

Enzo Amore def. Neville {WWE Cruiserweight Championship Match}
This was basically a long squash with one hope spot followed by Amore distracting the referee with the title belt and hitting a low blow for the win at 10:32. It’s rare that I agree with heel Corey Graves on commentary, but this felt super cheap. At least give Amore a couple other hopeful teases during the match to make it seem like he’d be a worthy champion who was fighting above his station. Whatever. **
