August 28, 2017 – Winter Park, Florida
Candice LeRae def. Renee Michelle {First Round Match}
They play up LeRae’s marriage to Johnny Gargano a bit, but they don’t mention that she’s held tag titles in men’s tag divisions, which is kind of lame. This was fine, just fine, which is more than you can say for a lot of the matches in the first round, but less than you’d like to see from LeRae. I got no sense for Michelle here. **¼
Lacey Evans def. Taynara Conti {First Round Match}
Conti’s throws were the most interesting part of this match, but the fact that Evans is allowed to use a Jig N Tonic as her finisher blows my mind. Does the MYC not abide by the piledriver prohibition? *¾
Nicole Savoy def. Reina Gonzalez {First Round Match}
Gonzalez had a tag sticking out of her trunks, and I was more distracted by that than I was attentive to anything happening in this match. Gonzalez has a more dynamic match in the first round the following year. *
Kairi Sane def. Tessa Blanchard {First Round Match}
Jim Ross tries to explain the Sane is a pirate because in real life she’s a yachtswoman. That’s some paper thin biz, but I love her in spite of it. This was easily the best match of the first round, as Sane is on a higher level than most of the rest of the field. Blanchard also ripped it up here, but what do you expect from a Horseman’s daughter? Come to think of it, why hasn’t Blanchard been teamed up with Charlotte yet to form a tag team called the Apocalypse? ***½
