I watched the Takeover specials before I watched the TV show. So I’m going to add notes to my original reviews now that I have the full context. I’ll put them in red.
April 1, 2017 – Orlando, Florida
Eric Young, Alexander Wolfe, Killian Dain & Nikki Cross def. Tye Dillinger, Roderick Strong, Kassius Ohno & Ruby Riot
I just want to remind everyone that I coined the term “Sick Kick.” It’s getting depressing how much Dillinger gets jobbed out at Takeover, despite actually being over with the crowd and pretty good. Given the environment, I think putting SAnitY over was a big mistake. *** They were building up SAnitY to be the tag champs, but I still think they should have lost here. Also, how the hell did Ohno end up in this feud?
Aleister Black def. Andrade Cien Almas
Black looked impressive in his debut here, but the match lost it’s flow a bit about halfway through. That caused some of the crowd to get bored and say so, which caused the rest of the crowd to loudly shout them down. None of that helped the match. There’s probably a better match between these two to come (foreshadowing). ***¼ Yeah, Brad, we get it; you knew they’d be fighting over the title down the line. Grow up.
Akam & Rezar def. Johnny Gargano & Tommaso Ciampa, & Dash Wilder & Scott Dawson {NXT Tag Team Championship Elimination Match}
I was losing my mind for 95% of this match. It was some of the best tag team wrestling I’ve ever seen and was on its way to being one of the best matches I’ve ever seen. It did lose just a little steam down the final stretch, and that’s the only thing keeping this from getting full marks. But it’s still the one of the best NXT matches I’ve seen to date. The tag team division is carrying this brand without breaking a sweat. ****¾ The tag division was definitely the best part of the Takeover specials, but on the weekly show they were all cutting weird, disconnected promos. The end of this match still kills me, as the two heel teams went up against each other after DIY went out first. Why book the match that way? It still makes no sense to me and I’m pissed that an almost perfect match had a weird finish.
Asuka def. Ember Moon {NXT Women’s Championship Match}
Asuka’s promo where she asks, “Ember, she works here?” is the hilarious beyond measure. As I was watching this I had a couple thoughts. 1) I really hoped we’d get a return to form from Asuka after a couple of unimpressive outings. 2) I thought about how much I liked the hard-hitting action, but was disappointed in the lack of selling. Then those thoughts kind of melted away because an unexpected heel turn for Asuka gave this match the something extra I needed to really like it. Props to the crowd for booing Asuka for cheating. ***½ Having now watched the TV leading up to this, the heel turn wasn’t surprising. But it was still well-executed.
Bobby Roode def. Shinsuke Nakamura {NXT Championship Match}
This is certainly a battle of excellent entrances, but I’m dreading the actual match. Okay, so is it cool that NXT gives their main event thirty minutes? Yes. Was this better than their previous match? Leagues and leagues better. But did it need a half hour to tell the story it was telling? No, it didn’t. There were big chunks of the match that, while competent, didn’t add to the story or lead into the ultimate finish. Still, this got me over my Roode-phobia, so there’s that. **** The singles matches he’d been having on TV also help with the Roode-phobia, because while they’re not great, they brought the title back to TV. That was missing a LOT in 2016.
