April 26, 2017 – Winter Park, Florida
Nikki Cross comes out to ringside and speaks into the microphone in the ring announcers lap to call out Ruby Riott. Riott comes out and the brawl. Referees and security pull them apart, so a match is made for later in the show.
Drew McIntyre def. Andrade Cien Almas
They’re doing a great job of keeping big boy McIntyre strong, and he really got the better of Almas here. Not as smash-mouth as McIntyre’s return match, but intense enough in its own right. **¾
For seemingly no reason whatsoever (but we know how wrestling works so Strong is about to get a big push), we get part one of a Roderick Strong documentary. They go over his rough childhood with his difficult, substance abusing parents, culminating in his mother shooting and injuring his father. Later, his mother seems to have overcome her drug abuse and is a supportive mother to Strong. Strong got into wrestling because his dad became a wrestler as an adult, being trained by Jim Neidhart. He trained an adolescent Strong as well, and then Strong and his father continued to train as backyard wrestlers behind their trailer home. And no surprise, this was another great doc that’ll get you choked up as long as you’re not a piece of garbage. More to come in the coming weeks.
Amsterdam Black def. Kona Reeves
This time around, it takes Black a couple minutes and thirteen strikes before he gets Reeves exposed for the Black Mass. N/A
Ruby Riott nc. Nikki Cross
Cross attacks Riott during her entrance and the match never ends up happening. It’s an exact repeat of what happened earlier, with security and the whole shpiel. Did we need this twice in one episode? Moments later, Asuka has a stupid, nonsensical reaction to William Regal telling her that her next contender will be decided in a battle royal. Maybe it’s because she remembered that she lost a battle royal before she was champion and she’s not really undefeated.
Tyler Bate def. Jack Gallagher {WWE United Kingdom Championship Match}
My favorite thing about the UK division is how remarkably British all the wrestlers look. Todd Phillips announces that a weekly WWE UK show is coming to the WWE Network shortly. It’s been 17 months and the now-titled NXT UK is still “Coming Soon.” The Gentleman’s Headbutt is my new favorite move in wrestling. Beyond that, this was a cute, mostly mat-based match that never really took off, but had a fun time of things on the ground. Trent Seven, Wolfgang, Mark Andrews, and Pete Dunne all look on from ringside. ***
Because the Cruiserweight Championship is now an NXT title and I’m reviewing every title defense of the WWE/NXT Cruiserweight Championship and post them on the NXT TV reviews that preceded them, here’s the title defense from Payback 2017.

Austin Aries def. Neville {WWE Cruiserweight Championship Match}
Aries won in 11:18 by disqualification when Neville threw the referee onto Aries to break up the Last Chancery. So the title stayed on Neville, though Neville’s undefeated streak on PPV ended here. This was the opposite of their WrestleMania match, as the bulk of the match was well structured but then finish was crap. Props for a good story, where Aries whethered Neville’s offensive onslaught, then was poised to win after a comeback and having answers for all of Neville’s offense until the champ had no choice but to cheat his way out of the match with his title. Maybe the rubber match will see everything click ***¼
