September 21, 2016 – Winter Park, Florida
Samoa Joe starts the show again. He has Shinsuke Nakamura’s medical report, which says he will be out 6-12 weeks. He wants William Regal to force Nakamura to wrestle or strip him of the title. Regal comes out and says he’ll deal with the issue in his own way. Joe threatens to hospitalize the whole roster if the title isn’t vacated.
Austin Aries def. Oney Lorcan
This made Orcan look incredible, even in losing. He just beat the piss out of Aries, and Aries had to repeatedly send him to the floor to survive. Loved this, as Lorcan made a headlock interesting for the whole first half of the match. I really needed to see a good match on this show to stay motivated to keep binging these things. After the match, Aries finally calls out Hideo Itami. Itami comes out and Aries flees. ***½
Billie Kay def. Aliyah
Hey, at least nobody embarrassed themselves this time, right? *¾
Cedric Alexander def. Andrade Cien Almas
Good back and forth action between these two, but I think they were outperformed a bit by Aries and Orcan earlier. Alexander is very loved by the Full Sail crowd, and they showed him a lot of that here. Now if only Almas could find a niche and connect with the fans. ***¼
Good episode this week. And now, as I said I would do in my Cruiserweight Classic reviews because the title is now an NXT title, I’m going to start reviewing every title defense of the WWE/NXT Cruiserweight Championship and post them on the NXT TV reviews that preceded them. First up we have TJ Perkins’ first title defense from Clash of Champions 2016.
September 26, 2015 – Indianapolis, Indiana
TJ Perkins def. Brian Kendrick {WWE Cruiserweight Championship Match}
Kendrick beat Gran Metalik, Cedric Alexander and Rich Swann on Raw earlier in the week to earn this title shot. His finisher has already been renamed the Captain’s Hook. Kendrick is suddenly a heel, despite getting the WWE contract he was desperate for in the tournament. This was like a reader’s digest version of the incredible stuff both guys were doing in the tournament. I did like that they incorporated some of the more effective things that got them over in Florida, but it was a bummer to see them move a full step and a half slower here. Perkins won with the anklelock at 10:31. Kendrick attacked Perkins after the match. ***
