Shinsuke Nakamura def. Wesley Blake
Blake has new gear and a new entrance music, but he seems like the same old Wesley Blake and he’s still arguing with his buddy Buddy Murphy. There was some cute comedy in this, but it was otherwise totally forgettable. After the match, William Regal comes out and announces that Nakamura will take on Samoa Joe for the title at Takeover in Brooklyn. He also says he was hoping Joe would be out there to hear it, but why would Joe be out there during Nakamura’s match? That’d be nefarious. *¾
Billie Kay def. Santana Garrett
Time to start elevating some mediocre female wrestlers now that your whole top tier is gone, NXT. The crowd was interested in next to none of this, save for a nasty big boot that Kay used to finish the match. I like Garrett and I’m kind of bummed she’s never been a regular player on this show. *
Bayley got a massive reaction as a surprise partner for Sasha Banks at the WWE Battleground PPV. She asks Regal for a rematch with Asuka. Regal is into it if Asuka is. Spoiler alert: Asuka is.
Nick Miller & Shane Thorne def. Rob Ryzin & Adrian Nails
It’d be cool if TM61 teamed with Hideo Itami when he came back, but that doesn’t happen (except for at a house show or two). I don’t review squashes. N/A
No Way Jose def. Steve Cutler
I might be wrong but I think this is the first time Cutler gets an entrance after 13 squash jobs. That’s not a random number, that’s actually how many times he’s been squashed on TV in the two years he’s performed in NXT. And this one is number 14. After the match, Jose lets Austin Aries know that he’s coming for him. N/A
Kota Ibushi def. Buddy Murphy
And so begins the temporary residency of CWC/205 Live guys in NXT. Murphy kind of looks like my friend Rick, and it’s bugging me out. This was a lot of fun, but way way way too short. I’m a little surprised they let Ibushi use a sit-out version of the Last Ride as his finisher, but then again he’s never going to wrestle the Undertaker. **¾
Joe wraps up the show by expressing the disrespect he feels when Regal makes title matches without consulting him. Joe calls Nakamura (who is undefeated) undeserving of a title shot. He won’t defend the title against him. Regal comes out and insists that he’s in charge. If Joe won’t defend the title, Regal will strip him of it and find someone else to face Nakamura for a vacant title at Takeover. Joe relents, but says that Nakamura might not make it to Brooklyn. Nakamura comes right out to show he’s not afraid, but Joe doesn’t make a move.
