July 27, 2016 – Winter Park, Florida
Zack Sabre Jr def. Tyson Dux
This was a good primer on Sabre’s style, as he fought through Dux’s power moves to dominate with his technical prowess. This was a good use for the miss-his-moment Dux, who got to look solid while largely getting dominated. Sabre won in 8:26 with the Omoplata. ***
Drew Gulak def. Harv Sihra
A couple of interesting counters (one of which played off of the other for the finish) aside, there wasn’t a lot to this. Putting this right after the last match was a mistake too, as the mat wrestling here didn’t measure up to what Sabre was doing. Points for that finish though, which ended with Gulak tapping Sihra to the Dragon Sleeper in 5:17. **½
Tony Nese def. Anthony Bennett
Bennett added nothing to this, and it was twice as long as it needed to be as it was pretty much a squash. Nese hit a 450 Splash at 6:34 to win the thing after the referee checked on a seemingly unconscious Bennett. The stunted finish do the match any favors, but it’s not like this was going to win any awards up until that point. **
Brian Kendrick def. Raul Mendoza
Daniel Bryan makes a Leonardo Spanky reference on commentary and I love him for it. They built some nice drama here, with Mendoza hoping to overwhelm Kendrick with his speed and flight, but Kendrick coming out on top with a couple dastardly tactics (fake injury, hardway cutting Mendoza’s mouth). I wasn’t mad at any of this. Kendrick won with the Bully Choke at 7:47. It was good to see someone cheat a little in this tournament. **¾
