NXT 336

May 25, 2016 – Winter Park, Florida

Bayley was going to get her rematch at Takeover, but after her match with Nappa Jax last week she’s out of action. The winner of tonight’s main event will get the shot instead.

Johnny Gargano & Tommaso Ciampa def. Shane Thorne & Nick Miller
The commentators make the first mention of the upcoming Cruiserweight Classic, which Ciampa & Gargano will participate in. Corey Graves says that the Mighty were the first gaijin in Japan to get “that honor” since Vader and Stan Hansen. What the fuck honor is he talking about? Because it sounds like he’s trying to say they were the first white people in Japanese wrestling since those legends and I don’t even know how to respond to such a claim. Once I calmed down and did my research I learned that they were the first gaijin team to win Tokyo Sports’ Tag Team of the Year award since Vader and Hansen. Maybe you can actually say what you mean, Graves! Miller certainly sells like his Pro Wrestling NOAH comrades, which is to say not at all. Thorne doesn’t have that problem. Anyhow, these guys put in a good showing in their debut, and Ciampa & Gargano were their usual excellent selves. ***

Andrade Cien Almas is coming soon. The video package hyping him is awesome, as he takes off his La Sombra match but we don’t yet get to see his face.

Aries comes out to the ring and says he wants to prove his greatness. He’s had great matches and won championships everywhere he’s been, and now he’s elevating NXT. Well, he hasn’t really done anything of note in NXT yet. He noticed that Shinsuke Nakamura, who debuted when he did, is getting more attention. He starts making threats to whoever wins the title match at Takeover, but is interrupted by Nakamura. Nakamura wants the title too. William Regal comes out and books them in a match at Takeover. Logic would have this be a number one contender’s match, but that doesn’t happen. Aries and Nakamura seem happy about the match and they shake hands.

No Way Jose def. Jonathan Ortagun
Ortagun sounds like a Final Fantasy villain. I guess this guy jobbed to the Ascension a couple times, but damn if I can remember them. He has his Johnny Vandal indy gear on, so why even change his name? I don’t review squashes. N/A

Nappa Jax def. Carmella & Alexa Bliss {Number One Contender’s Triple Threat Match}
This one started out a little rough, and the only real highlight in the first third of the match was Bliss’s conniving tactics. But I’ll be damned if they didn’t put together a really fun bout after that. I’m frankly shocked at how enjoyable this was. After the match, Asuka comes out to stare down Jax. ***¼
