Asuka def. Eva Marie
At some point, they just had to give Marie ten minutes against a really good opponent, and I have to say she didn’t totally blow it. The crowd was anti-Marie as usual, but she never gave them a reason to turn on the match (well, except for one overlong surfboard stretch). Good on ‘em. After the match, Nappa Jax approaches Asuka and avoids a kick. That basically killed the crowd, because Jax is a black hole for heat (I guess black holes are also black holes for heat, but I mean crowd heat and also leave me alone). **½
At a house show in Lowell, Massachusetts, Samoa Joe got a totally unearned title shot and actually won the thing. In hindsight, Finn Balor’s title reign was kind of bad. Yes, he had a few great matches, but in his nearly 10-month reign he averaged a title defense once every other month. That’s lame. And then he lost it to a guy he’d already beaten twice on a house show. I hope it’s addressed that Joe didn’t earn the shot. Oh, also, the title match is available on the NXT From Secret to Sensation DVD, and it clocked in at around ***¾ for me. Basically it’s a light house show version of their killer Takeover matches.
Dash Wilder & Scott Dawson def. Matt Lee & Jeff Parker
I don’t review squashes. I need the Revival to get back into real tag team matches because they’re clearly the thing raising the level of competition in big tag matches in NXT. Rather than invoke their rematch clause, Dawson says that every tag team is on notice until they get the belts back. But… they’re owed a shot… why not demand it? N/A
Zack Ryder & Mojo Rawley def. Wesley Blake & Buddy Murphy
This was pretty dull, and mostly functioned to show us how much of a non-factor Blake & Murphy are now. Good luck, fellas. After the match, the Revival attacks the Hype Bros. *
Carmella def. Aliyah
In an awkward moment, Carmella asks the crowd to do part of her catchphrase for her and they do nothing. Now that her boys are gone, it’s probably time to lean harder on the Bayley’s-sassy-friend gimmick than on the lesser version of someone else’s popular gimmick. Or maybe NXT just shouldn’t do tapings here again. This was decent enough for a short match with a super green opponent. *¾
Shinsuke Nakamura def. Elias Samson
Too short to matter, and Samson’s offense is still dishwater. Let’s keep stuff like this lower on the card. Kthanks. **
