I watched the Takeover specials before I watched the TV show. So I’m going to add notes to my original reviews now that I have the full context. I’ll put them in red.
April 1, 2016 – Dallas, Texas
Jason Jordan & Chad Gable def. Scott Dawson & Dash Wilder {NXT Tag Team Championship Match}
One botched spot aside, this was just awesome stuff that reminded me a lot of Ricky Steamboat & Dustin Rhodes vs. Arn Anderson & Larry Zbyszko from the Clash, which happens to be one of my favorite matches. More like this please and thank you. **** Almost four years after the NXT reboot, this was the first four-star tag team match in NXT history. That’s some serious tag team negligence. Luckily, this match (and to a lesser extent, the Revival vs. Enzo & Cass rivalry before it) represented a huge sea change in NXT’s tag team division philosophy.
Austin Aries def. Baron Corbin
Apollo Crews got bulldozed so that Corbin could job hard in a #1 contender’s match and then feud with newcomer Aries? Yeesh. Corbin looks like someone who would have a lisp. He’s also boring as hell, as was this match. Aries’ fluke win doesn’t do much for him and I continue to be baffled at the way they protect Corbin. *¾ As for the aforementioned #1 contender’s match, I’m impressed that that single match opened a path for three separate matches on this show. That’s good storytelling. Doesn’t make Corbin’s crap career any better though.
Shinsuke Nakamura def. Sami Zayn
Nakamura blocked Zayn’s DDT through the turnbuckle ropes here and it made me realize just how stupid that move is. That aside, this match ruled. You knew they were going to beat the piss out of each other, so it was nice of them to deliver. **** And then Zayn moved on to the main roster full-time. This match served as his graduation ceremony/farewell to NXT.
Asuka def. Bayley {NXT Women’s Championship Match}
The crowd was really annoying here, more interested in getting European-eque chants going than reacting to the match. Luckily, the ladies worked through it and put on a hell of a show. The whole performance, and the finish in particular, made Bayley look incredibly strong while losing, and made Asuka look like the best tactician in the women’s division. ****¼ This is one of the women’s title matches that I can remember most vividly at any given time, because the story they told was as strong as the shots they threw at each other.
Finn Balor def. Samoa Joe {NXT Championship Match}
Earlier in the night, Balor had a Force Awakens spoof Rolling Stones shirt on, which continues his theme of wearing shirts that have characters with whom he shares a kayfabe name. I just love that. This match was incredible and I think could have been the best Takeover match yet if it wasn’t for the doctors breaking up the momentum in the middle. In a way though, they kind of helped the story line as now Joe has an excuse to get another title shot. Which is good, because it seemed Joe should have won here, and didn’t because it was a WrestleMania weekend show and they wanted to send the crowd home happy. ****¼. I think saying it could have been the best NXT match so far if not for the doctor was an overstatement, especially because I still think it added some drama to the storyline.
This show is pretty nuts, and to this day remains one of the best wrestling shows I’ve ever seen. Four amazing matches and just one stinker is hard to top, and I can only think of two shows since off the top of my head (Chicago II and Brooklyn 4) that are better.
