Jason Jordan & Chad Gable vs. Enzo Amore & Colin Cassady
This is Enzo & Cass’s last match in NXT. There’s some of that going around tonight. Thankfully, last week’s show got the crowd warmed up at this taping, and they’re here for this match. Did you know that American Alpha’s finisher the Grand Amplitude was almost called the Omegaplex? I think they went the wrong way on that one. This wasn’t nearly as good as the matches either team had with the Revival, but it was alright. Jordan’s strap-pull redo was a cute bit. ***
No Way Jose def. Alexander Wolfe
Wolfe’s entrance music doesn’t match his gimmick at all. Jose’s music is awesome. Jose also has a funny take on the airplane spln, and the crowd has a funny take on the Ole chant for Jose. I don’t review squashes, but Jose seems like he’s going to be fun. There’s a strange parallel between this debut and Keith Lee’s a couple years later, where people of color debut against dubious German gimmicks. Not sure if there’s any there there, but it felt worthy of a mention. N/A
Nappa Jax def. Deonna Purrazzo
I don’t review squashes, and this also didn’t advance any storylines. N/A
Samoa Joe def. Apollo Crews
This is Crews’s last match in NXT and the crowd is hip to it. Crews was having fun on his way out, and Joe was more than game to bring some intensity to the mix. Crews, Enzo, Cass, Zayn, and Emma all went out on their backs, which makes Corbin’s weird squash last week all the more puzzling. Whatever, this match was fun. ***¼
In March 2020, during the Coronavirus outbreak. Scott Dawson released the following match to give people something to do while they were on lockdown. It was very nice of him. Assuming WWE didn’t have it taken down, you can watch it here.
April 23, 2016 – Poughkeepsie, New York
Jason Jordan & Chad Gable def. Dash Wilder & Scott Dawson {NXT Tag Team Championship 2 Out Of 3 Falls Match}
American Alpha won the first fall with the Omegaplex (I forget what they actually call that move, but Omegaplex was the superior backup name for it according to the Nigel McGuinness documentary) at 7:48. The Revival won the second fall with the Shatter Machine at 11:46. American Alpha won the third fall with stereo anklelocks at 20:18. This was totally a house show version of their excellent Takeover and TV matches, in that it gave us the greatest hits of the feud without the emotional roller coaster. But both teams worked hard, as I’d guess is the norm at NXT house shows, and the crowd was there for them because of it. The last few minutes was an unreal burst of energy, too. ***½
