Aiden English & Simon Gotch def. Tucker Knight and Hugo Knox
The silent Ks get squiggidy squashed here. N/A
Emma def. Santana Garrett
I’m starting to feel kind of crazy about Dana Brooke still being in NXT, so I looked ahead at her career on Wikipedia and learned I only have to endure a couple more episodes that she’s on. Bit of a relief there. Garrett is good looking, capable, motivated, and even kind of got over with the crowd here. So why did NXT waste their time with Emma and Brooke and just play footsie every once in a while with Garrett and no more? **
Like the rest of us, William Regal has identified Carmella as more or less a non-threatening entity, so to punish Eva Marie and Nappa Jax, they’re going to face Bayley and Asuka in a tag match. That was announced backstage, so Regal comes out to the ring to announce his new talent acquisition. It’s Austin Aries, but the former Ring of Honor Champion doesn’t make it to the ring before Baron Corbin runs out and beats him up. Corbin calls this revenge for Regal keeping him out of the contender’s match, but I think he just recognizes that Aries was about to turn 38 and it was a little late in his career for him to be just starting out in NXT.
Elias Samson def. Steve Cutler
Another boring Samson squash. N/A
Finn Balor def. Neville
The men’s singles and tag titles haven’t been defended since December in London, and I’m starting to get annoyed by that. The tag titles are going to be on the line next week at WWE Roadblock, but what about Balor’s title?! Okay, this match; First the pros. Neville’s selling is a true work of art. He’s almost unparalleled. I also bought a few of the near-falls down the stretch even though I knew the finish. The cons? This had a weird flow to it, moving in fits and starts. It was quite good, but didn’t measure up to their Takeover match. ***¾
The episode ends with a backstage spat between Samoa Joe and Sami Zayn to hype their match next week. Joe again says that he saved Zayn’s life when he debuted in NXT and stopped Kevin Owens from attacking him, but you know he’s never actually explained why he did that. He’s never been portrayed as a friend or ally of Zayn’s or as an old enemy of Owens. He just showed up and interjected himself. Zayn at least halfway (quarter of the way?) suggests that Joe did it to insert himself into the title picture, but given that it was months and months after his debut that he asked for his first title shot, that’s hard to swallow. Big match next week!
