February 24, 2016 – Orlando, Florida
Jason Jordan & Chad Gable def. Buddy Murphy & Wesley Blake
They gave these boys even more time this week than they gave them last week, and this took us on a bit more of a ride than the match last week did. It fell a little flat in its second act, but it finished strong. I have to say that I wouldn’t be mad to see American Alpha find more diverse ways to transition into their finisher. ***¼
William Regal announces a 2 Out Of 3 Falls Match in two weeks to determine the number one contender after their first two matches ended without a clear winner. There will also be a new NXT talent signing next week.
Apollo Crews def. Christopher Girard
Girard the real name of Biff Busick, who will later become Oney Lorcan. Girard has beaten Crews in both of their singles matches on the indies, once in XWA and once in EVOLVE. I’m pretty annoyed with this Orlando crowd, as the Full Sail smart marks would have been geeked for a snug bout from Girard, while these fans were silent. At least they were polite when Crews won. **¼
Tommaso Ciampa def. Bull Dempsey
Ciampa heeled it up here more than I expected him to, and beyond that this was kind of a cute comedy match turned disaster for Dempsey. **
Eva Marie & Nappa Jax def. Bayley & Carmella
The babyface team was having a lot of fun here. The heel team, less so. Jax is so green and gets no heat. Marie is a heat machine but has no ring confidence. Still, the match really wasn’t bad, and the finish was such a dig at the fans I ate it up. **¾
William Regal ends the show by telling Finn Balor that this reign as NXT is approaching the all-time record for longevity. That’s crazy because he’s only defended the damn thing three times, and Neville defended the belt nine times in about the same timeframe. That’s relevant, because Balor will face Neville next week to see who the greatest NXT Champion of all time is. I mean, Balor has already beaten Neville, but sure let’s do it again.
