I watched the Takeover specials before I watched the TV show. So I’m going to add notes to my original reviews now that I have the full context. I’ll put them in red.
December 16, 2015 – Brent, London
Asuka def. Emma
The final stretch of this match wasn’t very graceful (because Dana Brooke was involved and she’s awful), but it did make Asuka look like a bad ass and it came after a match that saw both women basically beat the shit out of each other. I can dig that. ***¼ I just really want this angle to be over. Get Dana Brooke out of NXT.
Scott Dawson & Dash Wilder def. Enzo Amore & Big Cass {NXT Tag Team Championship Match}
I really can’t express how much I dislike Enzo and Cass, the way they’re pushed, the fact that the fans embraced them, and the way that a great Struts song was used to hype them up. I get that they’re supposed to be like the New Age Outlaws, but I get more of an Oddities vibe from them. This match had good heat, a good story, and good action. Cass is pretty rough in the ring and Enzo is unbearable on the mic, but they put together a shockingly solid bout here. ***½ Dash & Dawson are my happy place.
Baron Corbin def. Apollo Crews
Corbin might be boring in the ring, but his trash talk is pretty funny when he tells Crews that he should have stayed in Ring of Honor with its loser fans. But having him win here is mystifying to me, especially over my man Apollo, and after such a dull match. *½ I hated pretty much everything about this angle, from its dog whistle racism to its favoritism of Corbin over the infinitely more talented Crews.
Bayley def. Nia Jax {NXT Women’s Championship Match}
This was alright, I guess. They did the monster vs. plucky underdog bit pretty well. Nia Jax is no Awesome Kong though, let alone Vader. *** They weren’t even really trying to push Jax as a Vader type, which is dumb. I think Jax is, in general, not very good.
Finn Balor def. Samoa Joe {NXT Championship Match}
I remember this match getting super high marks when it happened, and while I thought it was pretty epic in the beginning and down the stretch, it didn’t come together as a classic for me even though all of the ingredients for one were present. It was kind of like the run on sentence you just read; it’s seemingly great on the surface, but a second thought and something is keeping it from being a masterpiece. I might be overselling my writing. **** This match made, actually this entire 7-month feud, made no long-term impact on my memory. I have it in writing that I thought a lot of the matches were good at the time, but I can’t remember anything about them for the life of me. That’s sort of why I stopped watching Ring of Honor after a while; yeah the matches were good, but they weren’t hitting me with anything emotional that might keep them on my mind long after the fact.
