William Regal kicks off the show by announcing a battle royal in the main event to decide Bayley’s number one contender. Then he brings out Sami Zayn. He’s happy to be back and he wants to be the champion again. Samoa Joe comes out and reminds Zayn that he saved his life when Kevin Owens destroyed him. Joe wants another title shot. Baron Corbin comes out too and makes a claim. Joe walks out but Corbin attacks Zayn. That backfires on Corbin, and Joe thinks about attacking but then backs off.
The NXT Year End Awards, as voted on by the fans, are as follows: Enzo & Big Cass won Tag Team of the Year, Bayley won Female Competitor of the Year, Finn Balor won Male Competitor of the Year, Takeover Brooklyn won Takeover of the Year, Bayley vs. Sasha Banks at Brooklyn won Match of the Year, and Finn Balor won Overall Competitor of the Year. My quibbles? Enzo & Cass only had one good match all year, so that’s lame, but then the tag team division didn’t start getting good until the end of the year. I also liked Bayley & Banks’s match from Respect better than the match from Brooklyn, and I liked the ladder match more than both of those, but Bayley vs. Banks 1 is also great.
Tommaso Ciampa def. Danny Burch
This little ditty got Burch over with at least a few of the Full Sail fans. It seems like Ciampa’s deal for the next little bit is going to be having strong style matches for our benefit. **¼
William Regal makes a number one contender’s match with Zayn, Corbin, and Joe in two weeks.
Dash Wilder & Scott Dawson def. Konnor & Viktor
So what’s the deal here, every current tag team has to beat the Ascension? Not sure how they can still be called the most dominant team in NXT history when they just come back to lose over and over again. In any event, the Ascension definitely works better as a babyface team, and this was fine. **
Nia Jax, having been choked out by Bayley weeks ago at Takeover, isn’t medically cleared to participate in the battle royal. Eva Marie is secretly very happy about it.
Elias Samson def. Corey Hollis
I’m going to lose my damn mind listening to the commentators say the word “drifter” dozens of times during every Samson match. I don’t review squashes. N/A
Carmella def. Eva Marie, Asuka, Aliyah, Peyton Royce, Billie Kay, Liv Morgan, Emma, Alexa Bliss, Deonna Purrazzo, and Cameron {Number One Contender’s Battle Royal}
Marie and Carmella both spend pretty much the whole match hiding on the floor. Asuka thinks she’s won, then Marie eliminates her, and then Carmella eliminates Marie. Battle royals count, and that whole “Asuka is undefeated” thing it turns out wasn’t true. This was mostly alright, with the exception of Morgan and Cameron repeating a botched spot that they’d actually done a decent job covering up. Bayley is stoked that her friend Carmella gets the title shot. Of course, if you don’t watch Breaking Ground, you wouldn’t know they were friends. **½
