This is the year-end episode of NXT, and typically they hold back one never-before-seen match to tide people over while the wrestlers are presumably celebrating with their families. This year though, they were hocking the NXT Greatest Matches, Volume 1 DVD, so rather than show a match they showed clips of one of the matches on the DVD. The 3 DVD set only has two matches that I haven’t reviewed before (5 if you count the Blu-Ray extras, which I do), so I’m just going to review those for you here in lieu of all the video packages on this episode.
March 5, 2015 – Columbus, Ohio
Cesaro def. Adrian Neville
This was the dark main event of the TV taping they did at the Arnold Classic, and sad to say the guys kind of treated it like a dark match. It wasn’t bad, but they weren’t going balls to the wall either. Cesaro did look like he was having fun, giving the crowd a good old fashioned “hey!” and making sure he hit his indy classics Neville gussied things up with some flying off the stage, and the finish was wild, but that was already pretty deep into a match during which not a ton happened. ***
March 27, 2015 – San Jose, California
Hideo Itami def. Tyler Breeze
I reviewed this already but here it is again so you don’t have to click around. This is from a house show leading up to WrestleMania. There’s fan cam footage online of the whole show (pretty easy to find) and while I hear there’s some good stuff on there, the footage was a little overexposed for me so I’ll just stick to what WWE released here. The crowd was insanely hot for this match, which was the show opener, and KENTA’s performances so often hinge on how the crowd reacts to him. He was super into this, and it made it a lot of fun to watch. It also featured the debut of the Go 2 Sleep in NXT, which crowds had been begging for since his debut. ***½
The rest of these matches are blu-ray extras.
October 17, 2012 – Winter Park, Florida
CM Punk nc. Antonio Cesaro
This was one of the dark match main events they were doing in 2012. Another match like this was the Kane vs. Cody Rhodes match that they showed on the last episode of 2012. This happened the same night as NXT 139. The match is mostly a headlock, a la Claudio Castagnoli vs. Bryan Danielson in PWG, and when things start picking up Kassius Ohno runs out and interferes to end the match. The former Kings of Wrestling beat up on Punk until Seth Rollins makes the save. That leads right into… **½
CM Punk & Seth Rollins def. Antonio Cesaro & Kassius Ohno
The IWA Mid-South vibes coming off my screen are melting me. I’d be fascinated to know what Punk and Ohno would have said nine years earlier after their 90+ minute match if they’d been able to watch themselves work a WWE style tag match. This was alright, but they didn’t break their asses for a match that was presumably never going to be seen by anyone but the Full Sail crowd. ***
September 11, 2014 – Winter Park, Florida
Paige def. Becky Lynch
This was a dark match at Takeover: Fatal Four Way. Lynch was there to have a match. Paige was seemingly there to flirt with the crowd and try to get a reaction. The result was pretty weird, but it wasn’t bad. **½
