Michael Cole is in charge tonight, filling in William Regal who just had surgery. First, he mentions that while Regal didn’t want Eva Marie to challenge for Bayley’s title tonight, WWE corporate insisted. Samoa Joe and Finn Balor come out to sign their title match contract for Takeover: London. Balor wants Joe to look him in the eyes and own up to what he did, but Joe keeps his head down, signs, and walks to the back. Then Joe attacks Balor when his back is turned on the ramp. These contract signing segments are kind of a bore.
Dash Wilder & Scott Dawson def. Aiden English & Simon Gotch {NXT Tag Team Championship Match}
They really busted their ass down the stretch to make this more entertaining than the match in which Dash & Dawson won the titles. Certainly not mad at that, but the crowd just isn’t buying into the Vaudevillains as a real team, no matter what new tricks Gotch throws out or how much English has improved. After the match, Big Cass & Enzo come out and beat on the champs. ***
Asuka nc. Dana Brooke
Brooke is impossibly bad at wrestling and promos, and it just blows my mind that she’s still employed. Anyway, Emma attacks Asuka from behind before the match can start. Lazy shit here. Last week Brooke and Emma suggested that there was some master plan, and then it’s for Emma to attack Asuka from behind and then essentially leave her more or less unharmed? This angle is just awful.
Apollo Crews def. Jesse Sorenson
Rich Brennan tries to make it seem like Sorenson being here is a big deal, but he’s jobbed out on this show plenty of times and Corey Graves more or less calls out how stupid that is. And then Crews squashes him like a bug. The writing on this episode, from the angle in the last “match’ to the commentary on this one is so bad it hurts. Crews cuts a promo after the match accepting Baron Corbin’s challenge for Takeover, but even his promo is nonsensical, “I know they call you the lone wolf… but I will lay you down.” What the fuck does Corbin’s nickname after to do with laying him out!? N/A
Bayley def. Eva Marie {NXT Women’s Championship Match}
Marie has Jax in her corner for reasons that are never stated, seemingly to stack the deck against Bayley. And then Charles Robinson comes out, sent by WWE corporate, to assist the referee in this match. But that doesn’t make any sense because corporate seemingly wants Marie to be champ, but the referee that Robinson is watching over is the one that’s been favoring Marie in her recent matches. This episode seems designed to make me feel crazy. About two minutes in Bayley hits her finisher but Jax pulls the original referee out of the ring. That’s not a disqualification why? Robinson takes over while Graves calls out how stupid this all is. Little ‘Natch acts as a crooked ref until he gets bumped as well. Then the original ref counts the pin for Bayley after an avalanche Bayley to Belly. ¼*
Listen, I don’t have a problem with Marie being in this spot, she gets crazy eat as a heel. But the way this played out defied all logic and I feel more stupid for having watched it. You had weeks of building the NXT ref as potentially crooked, then you bring in Nia Jax without explanation and Charles Robinson to convolute the thing and it ends with one of the worst main events in this show’s history, if not the worst. Jax beats up Bayley after the match, but if a feud between these two was the end game, I can think of a dozen less frustrating ways to get there.
