June 24, 2015 – Winter Park, Florida
The show starts with Triple H, William Regal, and the entire NXT roster on the ramp for a 10-bell salute in honor of Dusty Rhodes.
After the intro, Hideo Itami comes to the ring. Itami says he’ll be back in 3-4 months. He will not. He’ll be in Japan for the upcoming NXT Championship Match, and he plans to challenge the winner. Kevin Owens comes out to run down Finn Balor and Itami, to brilliantly cover up a flub, to deny that he injured Itami in the first place, and to demand an apology for Itami calling him a bad person. Itami doubles down, so Owens decides to break Itami’s other arm. Balor makes the save, only to be attacked by Rhyno again.
Enzo Amore & Colin Cassady def. Jason Jordan & Sylvester LeFort
Jordan comes off as dumb as hell for picking former Legionnaires as tag partners. I understand where it’s leading, but the journey doesn’t make any sense. There seems to be a disconnect between the commentators and what’s actually happening, as Jordan gets pinned, but the commentators blame ring rust on the part of LeFort. *
Dana Brooke def. Cassie
Last week, Cassie was KC Cassidy. Maybe they realized it was a bit too close to Big Cass’s name. Cassie looked more confident this week than last, but the match was pretty bad. Because, you know, Dana Brooke. ½*
They show part 2 of the Finn Balor doc. It turns out he’s a man child, shown when he’s visited by Sami Zayn while playing with legos and wearing a Finn the Human Adventure Time shirt. I’m not mad at that, in fact I love it, I just felt it needed to be mentioned. His favorite PPV is SummerSlam ‘95. That actually becomes an important point later and I hope I don’t forget it. He met Jason Albert, now going by his real name Matt Bloom, when he first got to New Japan and they became great friends. They show photos of him with Yuji Nagata, TAKA Michinoku, and a bunch of other Japanese wrestlers, but the one I geek out for the most is a group shot including Milano Collection AT. There are a ton of Bullet Club references shown. It goes up to his singing with NXT, and there will be a third part next week.
Can we just talk for a second about how insane it is that this is the wrestling world now? WWE owns all its former rivals, and is granted video footage from current competitors, and makes the most of their talent’s stories from other companies. It still blows my mind. I don’t want people to lose site of just how unfathomable this photo should be:
Zack Ryder & Mojo Rawley def. Sawyer Fulton & Angelo Dawkins
The only good thing about Hype Bros matches is getting Corey Graves’ opinions about bro culture. Between Dawkins’ selling and Rawley’s, well, everything, this was basically a cartoon. It’s also kind of funny to think about the fact that Fulton & Dawkins are a fully failed proto-version of American Alpha. *
Meanwhile, Eva Marie is very attractive and that’s probably enough for Regal to let her wrestle in NXT.
Finn Balor def. Rhyno
Kevin Owens is on commentary during the match and he’s amazing, just cracking down and running Byron Saxton and Rich Brennan down mercilessly. He also talks about how he hated wrestling in Japan and is annoyed that he has to go back, which was a rather famous quirk about him when he was on the indies. After a middling match, he tries to distract Balor but it fails and Balor gets the win anyway. The mean men try to attack Balor after the match but Samoa Joe makes the save. **¾
