I watched the Takeover specials before I watched the TV show. So I’m going to add notes to my original reviews now that I have the full context. I’ll put them in red.

Finn Balor def. Tyler Breeze {Number 1 Contender’s Match}
The commentators mention that Balor, who has a giant eye painted on his back, takes his last name from the mythological Balor, who is a giant. So, that’s irony? I was starting to feel a little NXT fatigue from binge’ing these shows, but this match had a great energy and these two had good chemistry. I still think the demon gimmick is kind of stupid. ***½ I just want to reiterate how bummed I am that Hideo Itami was taken out of this match due to injury. And I can’t wait until we find out the culprit of the heinous parking lot attack that struck him down.
Charlotte & Bayley def. Emma & Dana Brooke
Dana Brooke really shit the bed here. Everyone else did what they could to work around her, but Emma also isn’t stellar and it looked like adults wrestling children. ** With more information, I know now that it isn’t that Emma isn’t stellar, she’s good, it’s just that she was really unmotivated at this point.
Baron Corbin def. Rhyno
I don’t really care about this match because I’m so stoked that they showed Uhaa Nation in the crowd, and then the fans chanted his name, and then he looked happy as hell. I love Uhaa Nation. The match was fine. Who cares. Uhaaaaaa. **½ Despite showing a bunch of vignettes featuring him, they still haven’t said Uhaa’s name, which is why the crowd chanted Uhaa. They also showed Peyton Royce, Billie Kay, and Alexande Wolfe. Also some super tall guy that I don’t recognize. I still don’t have anything to say about the Corbin vs. Rhyno match.
Blake & Murphy def. Enzo Amore & Big Cass {NXT Tag Team Championship Match}
I genuinely didn’t know that Big Cass had a different name when I saw him like three shows back accompanying Enzo to the ring, and I can’t be bothered to learn it now. The fact that Enzo and Cass are over makes me absolutely hate the Full Sail crowd. Cass has no ring awareness at all. The shady finish (Alexa Bliss saving the titles for the champions) wasn’t an entertaining capper to this mediocre match. *½ But it was nice of them to finally pull the trigger on the Bliss heel turn. Also, I was a little hard on Cass here, he has some ring awareness. I’m very happy that this feud is over (I sure hope this feud is over).
Sasha Banks def. Becky Lynch {NXT Women’s Championship Match}
Storytelling note for wrestlers: Don’t say things like “Since my change of attitude, I’ve been undefeated.” That’s something for your new steampunk look to convey and for the commentators to say. When you say it, it breaks the fourth wall and shows that either the NXT writers can’t write dialogue, or that you yourself don’t know how to speak like a human being. Not that wrestlers have a good track record of sounding like human beings. Anyway, let’s see if Lynch wrestles better than she cuts promos. It turns out that she does, and she has one of the best NXT matches to date, period. With the exception of a kind of botched and wholly unnecessary spot on the outside and a little bit of weird selling, this was outstanding. **** Both of these ladies really needed a good showing, and it was nice that they achieved it here.
Kevin Owens nc. Sami Zayn {NXT Championship Match}
This was gearing up to be a great example of why a shorter match can be better than a longer one, but then the non-finish just dragged on forever. And then for the payoff to be Samoa Joe showing up after the energy had been drained from the room makes me so confused as to who timed the segment. And then Owens just walks away without a punch thrown. I’d give the match higher marks, but it had no finish and the post-match piece was so awkward. *** I still hate that finish, or lack thereof, but I’ve warmed to the post-match piece because the crowd was crazy for Joe and it had a bit of a prison stand-off vibe to it. Also, Joe is in NXT now and that’s just wonderful.
