April 8, 2015 – San Jose, California
This actually happened on March 26 at WWE Axxess before WrestleMania. The whole show is a flashback to the tournament to see who would be in the Andre the Giant Memorial Battle Royal on the big show. In the first round, Finn Balor unceremoniously gave Baron Corbin his first clean loss, Tyler Breeze beat Bull Dempsey, Hideo Itami beat Jason Jordan, and Adrian Neville beat Kalisto.
Hideo Itami def. Adrian Neville {Semifinal Match}
Without much fanfare or notice, this was Neville’s last match as a regular on NXT (you could argue his title match with Kevin Owens was his actual last match as a regular), and he’d only come back for two more (televised) matches after this. I’m gutted. I believe this is the one and only time these two ever wrestled on TV. It was a really fun, simple match fueled by a remarkably appreciative crowd. I’ll miss you, Neville. ***½
Finn Balor def. Tyler Breeze {Semifinal Match}
Much like the last match, this was driven by two of the best in NXT and a strong crowd. It’s pretty stunning because they didn’t have to do much to get the fans eating out of their hands. ***
Hideo Itami def. Finn Balor {Tournament Finals}
This was just as good as Itami’s other match, and also featured a really nice Go 2 Sleep tease. It was really nice to see Itami get a night really focused on him, and he got to wrestle on the WrestleMania pre-show in front of over 75,000 people. ***½
The show is capped with a little documentary showing Itami’s journey from signing with WWE to being at WrestleMania. It’s pretty damn cool actually. Hulk Hogan is featured because he publicly introduced KENTA at a live event in Japan, and hearing him admit that KENTA got a bigger pop than him kind of blew my mind. They show Itami with his family leading up to the big show, and it’s reasonable to say he has the cutest kids on the planet. We see him backstage after winning the tournament on this show, where he’s congratulated by Triple H and Tatsumi Fujinami. They show clips of his match at the NXT house show on March 27th. At WrestleMania, Itami is welcomed by the guys you’d expect to be cool to him. In the Andre the Giant Battle Royal, he eliminates Bo Dallas before being tossed by Big Show. In a nice moment, they show him being cheered as he makes his way out of the arena. He and Big Show (who went on to win the match) make nice later on. This was really cool, just so well done. He was probably in line for a big push after this, but fate has a funny way of being a real son of a bitch.
You know what, screw it, here’s my review of the house show match, which is featured on NXT Greatest Hits, Volume 1.
Hideo Itami def. Tyler Breeze
There’s fan cam footage online of the whole show (pretty easy to find) and while I hear there’s some good stuff on there, the footage was a little overexposed for me so I’ll just stick to what WWE released here. The crowd was insanely hot for this match, like the folks at Axxess but, you know, 5,000 of them. This was the show opener, and KENTA’s performances so often hinge on how the crowd reacts to him. He was super into this, and it made it a lot of fun to watch. It also featured the debut of the Go 2 Sleep in NXT, which crowds had been begging for since his debut. The fans seriously lost it for the finish, and later Itami would say, “Finally, it’s my move, I take back.” That’s both a shot at CM Punk and 100% fair for Itami to say. ***½
