Alexander Rusev def. Kofi Kingston
Pretty basic stuff here, and a hell of a steamroll for Rusev. Things would turn around for Kingston not long after this. **¼
Emma def. Natalya [Number One Contender’s Match]
If you’re going to have your number one contender, who won her right to a title match in a dance battle, wait months on end to go for her title shot, it’s definitely a good idea to have her legitimize that claim with a match against a Hart. I could have actually used a few more minutes of this, and I hope we see a rematch somewhere down the road. More ladies fighting over submissions would be great. ***
Aiden English and Big Cass have their sing-off. English actually sings on-key. Cass isn’t bad either. He isn’t good, but he isn’t bad. None of this is really played for laughs, so Cass wins the popularity contest and English attacks him from behind. #ThatsNXTForYa
Tyler Breeze def. Mason Ryan
Ryan got distracted by Sylvester LeFort, who he’s still having issues with, and got pinned. This was nothing, and the most surprising thing about the segment is that Adrian Neville doesn’t come out to confront Breeze. ½*
Sami Zayn def. Leo Kruger [2 Out Of 3 Falls Match]
Zayn wins this thing 2-0, and there are a few things I really liked about this. The thing that stands out the most is when Kruger had Zayn locked in his submission, Zayn seriously considered tapping and dropping a fall. But he’d done that same thing in the Antonio Cesaro match and it may have led to him ultimately losing the match, so he changed up his game plan and toughed it out to keep the safety of his lead. And then in the end he wins. In a vacuum, this match is just pretty good, but I’m not watching this show in a vacuum and in the context of the other ⅔ falls matches it was even better. ***½
