December 25, 2013 – Winter Park, Florida
Like NXT 149, this is a year end retrospective. First off we get a look at the Performance Center, which was opened in 2013. Evil Rick Scott shows up to help open the thing. Has any other governor ever looked more like a comic book villain?
Next up they run down all the NXT stars that have graduated to the main roster: The Wyatt Family, the Shield, Fandango and Summer Rae, Xavier Woods, Damien Sandow, Antonio Cesaro, and Big E Langston who recently won the Intercontinental Championship. Ambrose, Sandow and Cesaro were both on the main roster before they were on NXT, but why quibble?
The creation of the Tag Team and Women’s Championships are covered. Both tournaments were pretty lackluster, and host Renee Young lies when she says that main roster stars participated in the women’s tournament. I mean, Alicia Fox did, but that’s one person.
Next up is a look at Bo Dallas winning his title from Langston, which reminds me that he’s used the exposed turnbuckle to win a couple of matches. That’s followed by a spotlight on the wrestlers NXT wants you to like now. Aiden English, Bayley, Tyler Breeze, Alexander Rusev, the BFF, Corey Graves, and Sami Zayn.
Did you know that main roster wrestlers sometimes dirty themselves in NXT? A lot of these appearances didn’t happen on TV (Christian, Mark Henry, John Cena, Big Show’s non-wrestling appearance).
William Regal cuts a really wonderful, melancholy promo, which is in stark contrast to Antonio Cesaro’s optimistic, boastful promo. Regal has to be one of the most underrated performers ever, who, per his own admission in this promo, didn’t deliver the way he wished he could have in the ring.
Then the Shield has to follow that with their same old same old. Probably should have spaced those two promos out a bit.
Cesaro and Zayn’s 2 Out Of 3 Falls Match is named Match of the Year by NXT. That is correct, though Zayn vs. Adrian Neville would have also been acceptable. Zayn cuts a promo saying that thinking about this match has him wanting to put an end to his issues with Leo Kruger in a 2 Out of 3 Falls Match so that he can move on to going after the NXT Championship.
Antonio Cesaro def. William Regal
Howard Finkel does the announcements for this match, making it feel pretty big. Dude only works like, one match a year on average. I’m not sure what I expected out of this, but I have to agree with Byron Saxton on commentary when he says, “I just feel like… this could have been something!” Well it was something, but it was oddly executed. I suppose all in all it encapsulated Regal’s career. It started out strong and interesting with stiff strikes and unique mat wrestling. Then it drifted and lost the crowd’s attention. And then the finish saw Regal unable to keep up, and Cesaro lose his nerve a bit out of respect and sadness. Maybe that’s how we all think of Regal’s career. If nothing else, it was a more dignified way to be sent into retirement than most wrestlers get. ***
