Big E Langston def. Curtis Axel [WWE Intercontinental Championship Match]
Paul Heyman kicked off the show saying he was looking to add another wrestler to his stable. That brought out IC Champ Curtis Axel, and I realize I’ve never seen his entrance under the Axel gimmick and I love his theme music. Anyway, this match has the same shit finish as last week’s midcard title match, as Heyman interferes and draws the disqualification. Just let the challengers have a good showing and have the champions win straight up. Langston does the 5-count thing after the match anyway. *½
Mason Ryan def. Scott Dawson
Enzo & Cass try to help Dawson win, but that pretty much goes nowhere for them and then Ryan beats up all three of them. Are we done with this now? ¼*
Paige def. Summer Rae [NXT Women’s Championship Match]
Rae getting the title shot against Emma is explained away by saying that Emma was injured by Rae’s post-dance battle attack and wasn’t cleared to wrestle. Not sure why you’d reward the woman who injured your top challenger, but here we are. Paige does this annoying thing wherein she hits the Paige Turner but then rolls her opponent over very slowly before getting the winning pin. There’s no sense of urgency to it. Anyway, this was very pedestrian compared to Paige vs. Emma, and it bums me out that they went in this direction. **½
A backstage segment that sets up Bayley vs. AJ Lee for the WWE Diva’s Championship exposes Bayley’s gimmick as a weird version of Lee’s, and the two of them trying to emote like circus clowns makes me want to die.
Dean Ambrose, Seth Rollins, & Roman Reigns def. Adrian Neville, Corey Graves, & Xavier Woods
Nobody seems to want to explain why Woods is involved in this storyline. I’m happy he’s here, but I want a reason. But then he gets pinned with the Shield and I get the feeling he was added just so that there’d be a fall guy. This took forever to get out of first gear. The crowd chants “that was awesome,” but was it? No, it wasn’t. It was fine, just fine. **¾
