March 21, 2012 – Newark, New Jersey
Justin Gabriel def. Curt Hawkins
This was more or less a squash. N/A
Now, this next segment is fascinating. Tamina congratulates Derrick Bateman and Kaitlyn on their new relationship. The couple leaves, then Titus O’Neil and Darren Young approach her. O’Neil wants to know why the Usos are always stopping men from asking her out, and then just as Darren Young bashfully starts to do just that (in a much nicer way than JTG ever did) the Usos roll up and put the kibosh on it. This angle and the JTG angle both make the Usos look like pricks, rejecting Young before Tamina has the agency to do so herself. Young says, “Why don’t you let your own decisions?” Why are you giving babyface lines to the heels and vice versa?
Darren Young def. Jey Uso
This was as basic as it gets. *¾
Maxine sends a fake text to Josh Matthews to get him to go check on his care. She tells Johnny Curtis to distract Matt Striker… so he chloroforms him. Maxine is upset that he overdid it. Then Maxine joins William Regal on commentary. That was actually pretty funny.
Percy Watson def. Tyler Reks
The match only exists as an excuse to have something in the ring happening while Maxine gives Regal a foot massage at the commentary table. They cut to commercial before we can hear whether or not Regal invites Maxine to his dressing room. *
Apparently Regal blew Maxine off. She finds Curtis and learns that someone else has Striker now and they’ve left a blackmail note. I wish all of NXT was this.
Tyson Kidd def. Michael McGillicutty
This match will later also be the first main event in the rebooted NXT. I was very kind to that match, and this one wasn’t even close. It was mostly boring, with McGillicutty controlling with a chinlock for most of it. It had a hot finish, though. Regal makes it clear he’s going to book a rematch. **
