December 7, 2011 – Jacksonville, Florida
It must be nice for all the wrestlers to land in Jacksonville and the Randy “Macho Man” Savage Non-International Airport. Derrick Bateman interrupts a promo from the Usos to get closure from Maxine. The Usos say that Tamina and JTG were screwing with him, and that Maxine left alone last week, not with Johnny Curtis. I do like the way these two issues have crossed over. Before we can learn more, Tyler Reks & Curt Hawkins come out for their match.
Jimmy Uso & Jey Uso def. Tyler Reks & Curt Hawkins
This seems like a blow-off episode for all the ongoing feuds. At least I hope it is. This sure was a long match. It was less than ten minutes actually, but it felt crazy long. It wasn’t terrible, but again (for the I don’t know how many-th time) who cares? This feud stopped mattering when Hawkins got hurt, if it ever mattered. **
Bateman runs into Maxine’s mom backstage (who maybe was introduced on Smackdown? Bateman seems familiar with her already even though I’ve never seen her before). She flirts with him and when Johnny Curtis walks up she makes it seem like he was making a play for her. Curtis says he’d never take away another guy’s fiance, but that he did bang Bateman’s mom. Bateman freaks out, so they’ll fight in the main event.
Darren Young & JTG def. Titus O’Neil & Percy Watson
The first half of this was quite boring, and then when it picked up a bit they went with a cheap finish (Tamina distracting O’Neil leading to the pin) to taint the good will they were building up. After the match, O’Neil laments that he’s been working hard for 39 weeks and he’s frustrated with Young costing him wins lately. He wants a match next week. That match won’t happen until January, I think because of a Young injury. *¾
Derrick Bateman def. Johnny Curtis
This was a drag. I expected something interesting from these two and they didn’t deliver. Bateman’s dropkick to the floor is always interesting, but they didn’t capitalize on the spot at all. Maxine comes out after the match and ends the engagement on account of Bateman “hitting on” her mother. **
And now, for something completely different. Around this time WWE had decided that NXT in its current form wasn’t a good long-term strategy, so they started transitioning the developmental talent from FCW into a new NXT that would debut about six months later. On the night that this episode of NXT aired, Full Sail University hosted its first NXT show called Full Sail Ahead. It looked more like post-reboot than pre. The first match here is from the NXT From Secret to Sensatio DVD, and the second aired on WWE Network’s Hidden Gems series.
December 7, 2011 – Winter Park, Florida
Xavier Woods def. Big E Langston
Woods cuts a more or less nonsensical promo before the match, and then he more or less squashes Langston. I knew this match would be short, but it’s pretty surprising to see Langston get dominated the way he did here, especially when comparing the way his and Woods’ NXT runs ended up shaking out. N/A
Antonio Cesaro def. Seth Rollins
This was an amazing change of pace from the garbage that was NXT at the time. Cesaro and Rollins were really on their game for this, even though they were only given about five minutes in the middle of the show to display their stuff. The match was more or less an extended squash for Cesaro, but Rollins got in a few impressive shots and was able to hit the Curb Stomp. It pretty much blew everything from preboot NXT out of the water in five minutes. ***¼
