Derrick Bateman tells Daniel Bryan that he loves submission wrestling now, because he won by submission last week. He wants to face Bryan in a submission exhibition… with pins legal… so a regular match. He has to beat the best if he wants to be the best. These two are a delight and it’s sad that nothing came of this pair outside of NXT.
The rookies do a pinata challenge. Brodus Clay wins. I also notice that Josh Matthews wears a lot of rings. That’s a weird look for a man.
Brodus Clay def. R-Truth
This was garbage. ½*
Next up is a trivia contest. Brodus Clay wins. Some of the questions were actually pretty tough, and the execution was a mess. Bateman and Johnny Curtis get slimed for losing.
They devote a huge chunk of the show to replaying the Rock’s return on Raw.
Daniel Bryan def. Derrick Bateman {Submission Exhibition with Pins Legal}
There was a neat little moment in here wherein Bateman was getting beat up and said out loud that he learned his lesson. This was pretty clearly the best NXT match to date. Bateman was game to try to keep up with Bryan, though he was rarely in control, and got owned when he tried to make Bryan tap to his own finisher. The last two weeks of Bateman matches would have you thinking NXT was an interesting show. You’d be getting played, but you’d have a good time while it was happening. ***¼
