WWE ECW 79

December 11, 2007 – Boston, Massachusetts

CM Punk & Kane def. Deuce & Domino
Punk gave up a ton to the greasers, which I guess sells the story that the babyfaces will be at a disadvantage in their tag match at the PPV, but it’s not like the heels have much experience as a team either. At least the finish made Punk & Kane look strong. *½

Shelton Benjamin talks about the gold rush as a really roundabout way of saying he wants a championship. He tries to use fool’s gold as a metaphor but never connects that to anything. The writing has been bad in WWE for a long time.

The Miz & John Morrison def. Jimmy Wang Yang & Shannon Moore
I don’t understand the logic of jobbing Yang & Moore out to Shelton Benjamin in the weeks prior to this and then making them competitive here. What I’m more understanding of is these four putting on a really solid tag team match for like twelve minutes. Yang looked especially great here, but the thing that got me interested was the logical if unusual ways that the wrestlers on the apron influenced the match. ***¼

Kofi Kingston beats up a prick who was kicking sand on people at the beach. This wasn’t well edited, but Kofi is coming so I can excuse it.

Layla & Victoria def. Kelly Kelly {Handicap Match}
This was rough. Four minutes felt like a thousand, and the wrestlers’ screaming was much louder than the noise made by the crowd. It was pretty much all bad punches and kicks until Kelly went down. Michelle McCool saves Kelly from a worse beating. ¾*

Batista def. Elijah Burke
They lie and say that this is Batista’s first time on ECW, probably because the last time he was on he got booed out of the building. I guess this is happening because Batista squashed Burke last week on Smackdown and once wasn’t enough. This wasn’t quite the squash that I imagine the Smackdown match was, but it was similarly designed to keep the champ strong going into the PPV. It also further cemented that Burke wasn’t on an upswing anymore. *

Okay, PPV time. It’s December so it was Armageddon.

Mark Henry & Big Daddy V def. CM Punk & Kane
As much as the matches were hit and miss, I was digging that ECW really only provided title matches to the PPVs, That said, given that you never see tag team grudge matches on big shows anymore, it was interesting that they booked this in theory. The match was… something. It was disturbing how much the commentators remarked on how girthy heels were. I can’t figured out what they were thinking in giving this ten minutes, as it was almost entirely a slow bore. That said the finish was really fun, all thanks to Punk. You’d think this was a method or recharging V as a title contender (he pinned Punk clean here), but it led to absolutely nothing at all. *¾
