John Morrison & The Miz def. Brian Major & Brett Major
Sometimes all you need is a basic tag team formula match to get over your plucky underdog team, even if they lose. I quite enjoyed this, even though it was only five minutes long. **½
CM Punk announced that even though he was given the choice between fighting Mark Henry or Big Daddy V, he was going to let Armando Estrada or Matt Striker make the choice. Punk was in a bad spot either way, so he’d fight whoever they put in front of him. This was very much a diet CM Punk promo. Striker later (very clearly work) flipped a coin which gave the match to Henry.
Balls Mahoney & Kelly Kelly def. Kenny Dykstra & Victoria
Okay, so this was Mahoney’s last ECW match ever. He worked one match on Smackdown after this a few months later, but for all intents and purposes this was his final bow. It’s kind of amazing that of all the ECW originals (to this point) Mahoney of all people had the most emotionally-driven angle on the show and got to leave without getting embarrassed. I’ve certainly seen worse mixed tag matches than this, as the crowd was REALLY behind Kelly and it gave this a nice little boost. **
Shelton Benjamin def. Jimmy Wang Yang
Elijah Burke doesn’t seem to be a part of Benjamin’s act anymore, which is nice. But Benjamin’s promo before the match wasn’t great, so that’s less nice. This was Benjamin’s third squash in a row, so all I can do is hope that they felt that was sufficient to give him a real opponent. N/A
Kevin Thorn def. Jeff Lewis
The commentators spent the duration of this short squash talking about how special Thorn is in the face of his look becoming totally bland. It was clear he wasn’t long for television. N/A
CM Punk def. Mark Henry
Punk won the thing by disqualification when V came into the ring. The match V interrupted wasn’t good, at all. Henry was moving really slowly here. Kane makes the save. *
