WWE ECW 69

October 2, 2007 – Dayton, Ohio

Vince McMahon starts the show by talking about John Cena… a man who isn’t on this brand. McMahon strips Cena of his title due to injury and announces that Randy Orton (who injured Cena the night before) will face… oh he actually doesn’t say. It’s understandable that they’d announce this as soon as possible given the rough spot they were in, but it felt really out of place on ECW.

CM Punk comes out to complain about Big Daddy V attacking him from behind, distracting him from the contendership race that will culminate tonight. Matt Striker and V show up on the big screen and say that V is coming for Punk’s title.

CM Punk def. Mike Knox
It took Punk thirteen minutes to beat a guy that Balls Mahoney beat in two minutes. He just looks so wimpy as champion. The match was a monstrous bore for entirely too long. *½

Balls Mahoney comes out and says that while he’ll deal with the Miz later, now he wants an answer from Kelly Kelly about going on a date. Kelly comes out and says yes. Mahoney gives her a big hug, which usually comes at the end of the first date. The Miz comes out with the other girls and rips on the situation. He tries to drag Kelly away, so Mahoney gives him a receipt from last week. Kelly screams that Mahoney doesn’t understand. Miz then reveals that he took over Extreme Expose’s management contract, so if Kelly goes out with Mahoney then she’s out of the group and out of ECW. Kelly chooses Miz and leaves the Ball Bear behind. That cheesy reveal actually gives nice context to the angle.

Tommy Dreamer def. Elijah Burke {Number One Contender Match}
Could it be that Kevin Thorn was the thing holding the matches in this series together? The process of elimination would make you think so, as this dragged on and on for over ten minutes without ever really becoming interesting. After the match, Armando Estrada comes out and says that there’s actually one more match in the series left. Dreamer now has to fight again. **

Big Daddy V def. Tommy Dreamer {Number One Contender Match}
V wins the thing in two minutes with an elbowdrop. Dreamer actually put up an entertaining fight, but it was hard to get the taste of throwing out weeks of build out of my mouth. The funny thing is, if this was a scripted TV drama, this turn of events would feel interesting and earned. After all, V was dominating in all of the episodes that the elimination chase was going on. But on a wrestling show it just sort of feels like a waste, mostly because of who came out on top in the end. *

So, yeah, they went through with this match at No Mercy.

October 7, 2007 – Rosemont, Illinois

CM Punk def. Big Daddy V {ECW Championship Match}
Before this could even get going, Matt Striker ran in and attacked Punk. So V got disqualified and the match lasted like 90 seconds. Then V beats up Punk after the fact. We spent a month building to this. Punk bleeds from the mouth as he leaves. *
