September 18, 2007 – Atlanta, Georgia
Elijah Burke starts the show by reminding everyone how dominant he was in the title match on PPV all but demanding another title shot. Kevin Thorn comes out and tells Burke to step aside so that he can step up to Punk. I’m just now noticing that Thorn doesn’t have fangs anymore. Tommy Dreamer interrupts to say he deserves a shot based on having been ECW Champion before. Stevie Richards comes out and Tazz says, “and the pot thickens.” He’s so bad, but I quickly forget about because the following exchange happens and makes me laugh like a bastard:
Dreamer: Stevie, I’ve known you for sixteen years. You, more than anyone in this building, knows how much this ECW Championship means to me, so come on man.
Richards: Oh come on, you’re going to come on me.
Anyway, Richards points out that he’s the only guy in the ring who didn’t get pinned last week, so he wants a shot. Armando Estrada comes out and sets up an elimination chase to determine Punk’s next challenger. They’ll have a fatal four way, then whoever doesn’t get pinned will be in a triple threat next week, and the two not to be pinned in that match will face off in a contender match the following week. That’s a cool concept.
Elijah Burke def. Tommy Dreamer, Kevin Throne, and Stevie Richards {Fatal Four Way Match}
At sixteen minutes, this was about twice as long as it needed to be. The first half was completely directionless. The final few minutes on the other hand got the crowd totally riled up and made everyone look really good. Richards ends up getting powerbombed and frog splashed, leading to Burke technically eliminating him (he had a lot of help from Thorn). **½
In the back, Burke asks CM punk to sign his magazine cover and taunts him about coming for the title again.
Balls Mahoney def. Mike Knox
MIz brings out Extreme Expose to dance before this match. They kept this very simple and it worked in the couple minutes it ran. After the match, Miz tries to drag Extreme Expose away, but Mahoney gets on the microphone and asks Kelly on a date. Kelly smiles as she’s dragged away, so Mahoney considers it a yes. *½
Big Daddy V def. The Boogeyman
I’m surprised to say that I’ve seen worse matches between bizarro gimmicks like these. V was very motivated (this was probably the biggest push he’d gotten in WWE in over 10 years), and it showed in his performance. Plus they kept this under five minutes, so I thank them for that. **
