Chris Benoit def. Elijah Burke {Semifinal Match}
This match is notable for being Benoit’s match before he killed his family and himself. This was fine, just fine. I mean what do you want out of Burke at this point? And what do you expect from a Benoit that’s not motivated to live let alone bring his A-game on a crappy show? **½
Stephanie McMahon cut a boring promo on Raw, “tearfully” hyping a three-hour Raw dedicated to her dad and saying that they’ll find out who is responsible.
The Boogeyman def. Shawn Alexander
Just a squash. N/A
Kevin Thorn def. Tommy Dreamer
They didn’t change the ECW roster enough. This was boring and there’s just nothing else about it to make note of. *
They show McMahon blowing up again. The ratings for Raw are really low right now, but I can’t believe the show wasn’t completely abandoned in June of 2007. No mention is ever made of the fact that there’s no body, making literally everyone on this program look like a moron.
Johnny Nitro def. Nunzio
This would end up being a de facto contender match, because someone had to sub in for Benoit at the PPV. Somehow, the Italian Tazz and Joey Styles still manage to make Nunzio seem like a racist gimmick. I’m probably being oversensitive. The match wasn’t technically dull, but the crowd was silent for it and it didn’t get me going either. *½
There’s trouble in Extreme Expose. Brooke wants to get hooked up with the Miz, but Kelly Kelly was seen canoodling with him last weekend. I mean, at least they’re finally doing something with these ladies.
CM Punk def. Marcus Cor Von {Semifinal Match}
Before the match, it seemed clear that Burke isn’t wild about the idea of MCV being champion. This wasn’t the most boring MCV match I’ve seen, but it wasn’t good or anything. Luckily, he had the good sense to call it a career after this match. Less luckily, the rest of the New Breed stuck around for another year. **
So now it’s time for Vengeance: Night of Champions. Chris Benoit skipped the show because he was busy ending his life and ruining wrestling for a while (though forcing everyone to pay more attention to the darker side of the business). WWE got to look gross by not really skipping a beat the night after this.

Johnny Nitro def. CM Punk {ECW Championship Match}
Joey Styles wrongly says this is Punk’s first world title match, but this was before WWE was acknowledging the indies. The finish here was a little flat, but they did a really great job of getting the crowd to forget that Benoit wasn’t there (the crowd really really wanted Benoit to be there) through force of hard work alone. Really solid stuff here. ***
