April 17, 2007 – Milan, Italy
The New Breed comes out to start the show. Elijah Burke asks CM Punk to explain why he joined up, but Punk says it’s obvious and gives no explanation. The writing on this show is bad and they should feel bad.a Rob Van Dam comes out to let Punk know he’ll regret it. He challenges Burke to a match. Wouldn’t it make more sense to have Punk wrestle RVD and get a big win to make his heel turn mean something? Punk chimes in but Burke overrules him. So they knew that it would be more interesting and still decided not to do it. That’s worse, and a match between the two never happened.
Snitsky def. Nunzio
Nunzio goes hard on the Italian pride, but gets squashed anyway. He was actually really over with the crowd, but that didn’t stop this match from feeling like it was four times longer than it was. ½*
Backstage, Punk and Burke already aren’t getting along. Later, Punk sows the seeds of division by trying to woo Matt Striker to his side. Even later still, Burke catches Punk giving a pep talk to Kevin Thorn & Marcus Cor Von. They seem really eager to fly through this angle.
Sandman & Tommy Dreamer def. Kevin Thorn & Marcus Cor Von
I’ve never experienced a commentator get worse every week the way Tazz was doing here. At one point Sandman’s Heinekenrana was blocked, and Tazz said he didn’t know what Sandman was going for. He was going for the move he goes for in half of his matches, doofus. He also got confused by the word “aligning” when Joey Styles used it. The match had some fire thanks to the wrestling-starved crowd, but the finish was so badly executed that the fans suddenly fell silent for it. *
Bobby Lashley comes out and introduces Santino Marella, who debuted on Raw the night before and won the Intercontinental title from Umaga. Marella cuts a promo in Italian, maybe, and that’s it.
Rob Van Dam def. Elijah Burke
M’thinks I may have been a little hard on MCV last week, as it’s now looking like RVD was mighty unmotivated at this point. This match was about as boring as last week’s main event, though this one had a funky finish with Punk “inadvertently” giving a chair to RVD that helped him win. *¾
