WWE ECW 44

April 10, 2007 – Providence, Rhode Island

Vince McMahon comes to the ring to start the show. He shows a video clip of Raw last night, where he had Bobby Lashley beaten up and announced an ECW title handicap match against Umaga, himself, and Shane McMahon that will happen at Backlash. Vince was referring Shane as the best in the world even back then. Then he telegraphs that he himself is going to be the one to win the title.

Rob Van Dam and CM Punk have a chummy chat backstage. RVD wants Punk to align with the ECW Originals. Elijah Burke interrupts. Punk is irritated with all the politicking, so he’s going to let us know tonight where he stands.

Kevin Thorn def. Tommy Dreamer
This was only about three minutes long and the crowd didn’t care about any of it. These are not the guys in the New Breed vs. ECW Originals feud that people care about. Who can blame them when their matches are so short and yet so boring. ¾*

Snitsky interrupts Extreme Expose’s makeup routine and stares at Layla. The ladies slowly walk away from him. That was weird. It turns out that Snitsky’s attack on Holly put him on the shelf. Later on, Extreme Expose get through their routine, only to be approached by Snitsky again. Kelly Kelly and Brooke bail, but Layla acts like the ropes are a force field and can’t get out. I can’t express how stupid and funny that looked. Then Balls Mahoney provides a distraction and Layla gets out. Snitsky lays out Mahoney after no-selling a chair shot. This wouldn’t have been terrible had it been Timbaland who made the save.

CM Punk def. Stevie Richards
What is going on here? Is Stevie Richards the only jobber on the roster? What happened to Danny Doering & Roadkill? Matt Striker and Sandman come out to keep an eye on the match. Punk won this three-minute match despite Sandman accidentally distracting him, The match was just an excuse for Punk to have a flimsy reason to turn heel later. ½*

Marcus Cor Von def. Rob Van Dam
This wasn’t it. This wasn’t really anything. If MCV had so little to offer that he couldn’t even fill a ten-minute main event with RVD as well as others on the roster were doing at the time, it’s no wonder that he was gone a few months later. A distraction from Burke at ringside gave MCV the win here. After the match Punk runs out and joins the New Breed. The turn feels completely empty because Punk didn’t affect the outcome of the main event at all. *½
