February 6, 2007 – Omaha, Nebraska
The show starts with Vince McMahon confronting all five ECW originals in the ring. He books a few of them in matches, and says if they interfere in each other’s matches they’ll be fired. They’ve never really done that, so there’s no weight to the threat. They also can’t touch the officials, setting up a twist.
Snitsky is coming to ECW. Good, something weird and fun to shake things up a bit.
Kevin Thorn def. Tommy Dreamer
Matt Striker is the guest referee. He gets a leg cramp a couple minutes in and doesn’t count for Dreamer. But then Thorn wins with a schoolboy clothesline and the camera cuts away while Dreamer is staring at Striker so the whole production feels like it’s taking the night off. ½*
Bobby Lashley def. Hardcore Holly
Lashley’s comebacks are fun, but this match was mostly Holly and that dude is boring as hell. His title reign has been bunk because Big Show’s absence is really showing the vacuum on the main event heel side. And clearly McMahon was feeling the same because after the match Snitsky comes out to attack Lashley. Then Holly hits an Alabamaslam. **
Marcus Cor Von def. Balls Mahoney
Striker is the guest timekeeper. Mahoney is wearing a neck brace because Umaga beat him up the night before. Von’s jazzy entrance music is at odds with his intense gimmick. They really had no idea what they were doing with him, or this show in general. Mahoney gets rolled here, and Striker’s presence was irrelevant. ¾*
Next up is Extreme Expose. It’s still hilarious. Striker interrupts this week to reveal that he’s the special guest ring announcer for the main event. He announces that Von will be on commentary and that Thorn is the guest timekeeper. I guess Sylvester Terkay wasn’t considered good enough to be in a faction with these wrestling geniuses. Fuck my life.
Elijah Burke def. Rob Van Dam
The finish here was kind of cute, as Burke’s buddies rang the bell to distract RVD and the referee, allowing Burke to win with a low blow. Burke is kind of a bore, but RVD was relatively motivated here. The ECW originals chase the bad guys from the ring after the match. **½
On the one hand, I like when a show has a running theme throughout it. On the other hand, the New Breed is made up of really boring wrestlers.
